A rocket carrying an Indian communication satellite has exploded just after its launch in southern India.
Television images Saturday showed the rocket exploding in the first stage of lift off from the Sriharikota space center. It was carrying a GSAT-5P satellite into orbit.
There was no immediate comment by state-run Indian Space Research Organization.
It was the space agency's second launch failure this year. A rocket on a developmental flight in April plunged into the Bay of Bengal.
India's launch of its latest communication satellite failed Saturday afternoon after the rocket GSLV-F06 carrying it developed a technical snag soon after its take-off from the southern spaceport of Sriharikota, Dec. 25, 2010. (Xinhua/AFP Photo)
