Shock and condolences as the Netherlands reacts to David Bowie’s death

A book of condolence for David Bowie has opened at Groningen’s museum following the shock news of the singer’s death from cancer. 

The Groninger Museum is hosting a special David Bowie exhibition until March 13 as the last leg of the show’s European tour. Its website was temporarily unavailable on Monday morning because of the surge of interest in news about the artist. 

A spokesman said later the Bowie exhibition would open specially from 12 noon until 6pm on Monday, but the rest of the museum is closed as usual. Visitors without tickets will be able to sign the book of condolence. 

Train operator NS said a special Bowie carriage, redecorated for the exhibition, would continue to run on the line between Zwolle and Groningen in tribute. ‘We think this will allow us to offer something more to fans who want to remember Bowie in a good and respectful way.’ 

Theatre

Distraught fans around the world flocked to social media following the announcement that Bowie had died at the age of 69, 18 months after being diagnosed with cancer. His illness had not previously been made public. 

Belgian theatre director Ivo van Hove worked with the British musician on his last stage musical, Lazarus, in New York. ‘Bowie was still writing on his deathbed, you could say,’ Van Hove told NPO Radio 4. ‘I saw a man fighting. He fought like a lion and kept working like a lion through it all. I had incredible respect for that.’ 

Van Hove, who says Bowie was suffering from liver cancer, was one of the few people who knew about the singer’s illness, after Bowie explained to him why he would not always be able to attend rehearsals. He was with Bowie at the premiere of Lazarus last month, one of the singer’s last public appearances.

Bowie’s death was announced by his son, Duncan Jones, on Sunday, two days after the singer marked his 69th birthday with the release of his latest album, Blackstar. ‘David Bowie died peacefully today surrounded by his family after a courageous 18-month battle with cancer,’ Jones wrote on Twitter.

“… The Human Spiritual System

The puzzle during your life is about how much of this truth of being part of the creator you can accept. How far can you open the quantum door to see this truth when you are alive? This single attribute determines how enlightened you become during life. Listen: It's not how much knowledge and experience in is your Akash, but how much you allow yourself to believe it. There are many old souls on this planet who have an amazing amount of spiritual learning, yet they don't want to touch that "spiritual jar" within them at this point in their lives. This is the free choice of the Human Being we speak about.

There is immense planning that puts you at the Wind of Birth. What did you accomplish during the last lives, if anything? Who were you and what did you do? What energies did you start that were not complete that you wish to continue? What soul group were you in? Who were your parents? Are you in certain soul agreements to become their grandchildren? That is more common than you think! There are so many things that go into the planning of the "entry energy" of your life, and each life potential is different and unique. The planning is done by you when you have "the mind of God" on my side of the veil.

Humans don't like the fact that there is no generic spiritual instruction manual that states, "Here is what happens and here is what to do." Listen, dear ones, humanity is honored way above that! Are all your children the same? Do books on how to raise children always work for your child? The answer is no, because each soul is totally unique. But Humans still wish to have a list of things to do and not to do, as though each soul somehow came out of a spiritual machine that made them all the same. No. Instead, Spirit honors each soul with unique choice and a tremendous variety of energy selections.

The Great Artists

There are certain attributes that Humans receive on the planet, and we'll call them creative attributes. These are almost quantum attributes that may take several lifetimes to complete. What often happens to these creatives is that they go through a series of lifetimes as though it were one in order to have completion of their creative cycle. Famous artists will come back, and the first thing they want to do is pick up a brush and continue what they did before. Famous composers, famous poets and sculptors will come back and simply keep going! It's so obvious, yet you deny this in your scientific way.

So the creatives are different from the others, and their puzzle is to bring the planet the greatest treasures of art through a unified series of lives, yet personally they try to sort out the puzzle of "what they carry inside is valuable, but nobody knows it". If you've noticed, most of the great artists who have even lived and are here today carry a burden that is easily identified as "lack of self-worth". Do you see the set-up? It's ripe for personal discovery, isn't it? So can you see the Human standing in the Wind of Birth, ready to continue what they only began last time? With the "mind of God", there is a smile on their face as they hear the music that they will compose, for it's with them when they arrive.

As you stand at the Wind of Birth, you are completely and totally a unique creature with incomplete energies. It takes more than one short earthly life to create Human attributes that grow into maturity. Even non-creatives (most of you) have a lineage of starting something that never got fully completed. Sometimes it's within relationships. Sometimes it's learning or teachings. Old souls are good at this coming and going and often pick up where they leave off as they slowly change the planet by their very presence upon it. The old soul is, "Sewing the seeds of light on the carpet of linear time, not even knowing that he will also be harvesting those exact mature plants of wisdom as he returns in a subsequent life."

Therefore, dear one, you don't arrive with a blank slate, but you have to know that, don't you? The old soul feels it. The only ones who arrive with a completely blank slate are the newbies [first timers] and we'll talk about that in the next wind. But this is a room of old souls who are hearing and reading right now. Each of you is here with a spiritual jar that is filled with the experience of living on Earth, and sometimes even the attribute of "awakening to your own mastery".  ….”

The overture to the Fall of the Wall

In 1989, after 28 years of divinding Germany, all of a sudden the Berlin Wall came down. But it's a little known fact that before reunification, East and West held detailed preliminary talks about open borders.

October 29, 1989. It's Sunday. Walter Momper, governing mayor of West Berlin, is in the eastern part of the city. Not entirely incognito, but not officially, either: Manfred Stolpe, a leading figure of the East Germany's Evangelical Church, has invited him for lunch, surprise guests included.

Stolpe, a Social Democrat who became state premier in Brandenburg after reunification, is just acting as go-between. He has two top-level GDR representatives in tow: Günter Schabowski, East Berlin SED (Socialist Unity Party) leader and Erhard Krack, mayor of the East German (GDR) capital.

Serving as venue for this conspiratorial East-West-exchange is the Rose Parlor of the Palasthotel. Among other things, the two East Germans want to discuss the GDR's new travel law about which, four days earlier, the SED party newspaper Neues Deutschland had written for all to read: Further details to follow. The law was scheduled to come into force before Christmas. This was a sensation - a feeling shared by Momper.

Basic work in East Berlin

Momper is downright electrified, according to contemporary historian Hans-Hermann Hertle. As early as the following day he set up a task force under the leadership of the senator for economic affairs.

Schabowski's account surpasses his expectations. Within just a few weeks, hundreds of thousands of East Germans will be allowed to visit West Berlin. The GDR intends to issue passports in order to contain a mass escape movement. Momper knows that his city is not prepared for this kind of rush.

Additional border checkpoints will have to be set up. To Momper's surprise, Schabowski shares this view. Accommodation for East Germans is an open question as well: No-one knows how many of them will just visit and how many will stay. And there are further issues: Will they arrive in their Trabi and Wartburg cars? And they'll definitely be needing maps of West Berlin.

Time is of the essence. Schabowski gives Momper a date: From December 1 at the earliest, the people of West Berlin will have to expect considerable numbers of visitors from the East. Trying to respond adequately, the task force decides in its first meeting on November 1 to schedule follow-up sessions for November 8 and November 15 respectively - unaware that just a short time later events will spiral out of East Germany's control.

November 3: The Rose Parlor meeting does not remain secret for long. Western Allies are miffed: They take a dim view of unauthorized talks with East Berlin behind their backs. American envoy Harry Gilmore urges Momper to report to the three Western Allies.

For Egon Bahr, former SPD party leader and Chancellor Willy Brandt's most important foreign policy adviser, it's a mystery to this day that Momper could establish contact with East Berlin at all, without the Americans, the British and the French knowing about it and giving their blessings.

He told DW that he harbors great doubts with respect to the nature and development of the Momper-Schabowski talks. The lack of consultation with the Allies, in particular, to him is intangible.

Even Horst Teltschik, Helmut Kohl's most important adviser in the chancellor's office, claims ignorance as to the Momper-Schabowski talks. "I don't remember any concrete decisions or considerations regarding the opening of the border prior to the fall of the Beriln Wall," he told DW. Conclusion: West Berlin was out on its own at the time.

A controversial letter

On November 6 Walter Momper writes a letter to Chancellor Helmut Kohl. West Berlin, being financially dependent on Bonn, will be unable to cope with the challenge without help from the German Federal Government.

Among other things, Momper proposes that the government send its "welcoming money" to the GDR's state bank, which could then proceed to hand it over to those intending to visit West Germany. Kohl would never have accepted this, says historian Hans-Hermann Hertle, because such a step would have provided legitimization to the GDR leadership.

It is evident that Momper wants to set up a meeting with Kohl. But his letter remains unanswered, Momper tells Hertle many years later. The three-page document was intercepted by the GDR's Stasi secret police. Although the GDR was imploding as a state, its spy network was still functioning perfectly.

Party leader out of his depth

Come November, Berlin is getting ready for the rush and appears to be on the safe side even without support from Bonn. After all, the accords agreed on October 29 had included Schabowski's assurance to send out an early warning two weeks prior to the announced opening of the border.

The central idea of the new GDR travel regulations is handing out passports, issued on request. Dealing with these requests would take a processing period of about six weeks. It was a plan with built-in checks, spread out over weeks. However, events took an unexpected turn. The early warning call never came.

Bureaucracy, for all intents and purposes an area of competence of the SED dictatorship, turns out to be a maze in which the protagonists lose their bearings. Marathon sessions and lack of sleep having taken their toll, and Schabowski fails to stay on top of things in a crucial press conference on November 9.

There is a blocking period for the travel law, but Schabowski is unaware of this. The original plan was to broadcast the new travel regulations on the radio at 4 a.m. the following morning so that border guards would be informed and prepared. Organized exits would have been possible. But briefly before 7 p.m. Schabowski utters the key phrase: "…according to my knowledge this is right now, immediately."

Years later Schabowski revealed all the other thoughts that crossed his mind during that historic press conference. Responding to a journalist's question whether the new travel regulation applied to West Berlin as well, "it suddenly hit me that we had not discussed this with the Soviets." It is amazing to see how independently the Germans arranged their destiny as early as autumn of 1989.

Their lives were those of men with careers and of an age where starting another passion wasn't something they would do. But they did, and it coincided with the Great Shift.

Remember, there is no such thing as predestined prophecy. God cannot tell you what's going to happen, for on this planet, humans are in charge. "If that's the case, Kryon, how can you tell us about a plan?" It is because these things I speak of are the potentials in front of us, generated by the consciousness of humanity. Therefore, what I give you is something we read into the consciousness of potentials. They are not predictions, but potential energies of what you are about to accomplish as you act upon the energy of the consciousness you have now. Much has happened in these 20 years, and it's part of the shift. Here was the plan from 1987 to 1999 - we told you the following things would take place:

Remember, as I speak to you now, this is history. But when I gave it to you in 1989, it was your future. The first thing that was at hand was moving the magnetic grid. That's why I came here. The grid group came in 1989 and left in 2002, and the grid was moved for the reasons I've been giving you and itemizing for 20 years. It was to build a matrix for a change in your DNA. This is, indeed, what happened, for the grid's magnetic field moved greatly in that time, and it has intersected with the magnetic field of your DNA elements. This overlap has transmitted information and energy and a new quantumization to your DNA, which has always been quantumly prepared for this.

The second item in this first phase was the voiding of the energy of Armageddon. Now, for those of you who think nothing happened, a great deal happened: This planet moved into another energy at that time. One of the largest political systems on the planet fell over and didn't come back, known as the Soviet Union. Again, we say to you there is no Nostradamus quatrain that predicted this, and that should tell you something. It changed the future greatly, yet no prophet called it. Old-age poverty soars in Germany

Gaps in Germany's statutory pension system have forced nearly a half-a-million retirees to turn to local welfare offices for subsistence funding. Unions and charities are demanding that the government intervene.

Germany's federal statistics bureau said on Tuesday that 465,000 retirees older than 65 were registered in 2012 as dependent on basic welfare subsidies. That was a 6.6 percent increase on the previous year and almost twice the count in 2003.

The DGB trade union federation said the true level of impoverished elderly in Germany was twice as high as the registered level given in the official statistics.

DGB presidium member Annelie Buntenbach said it was commonly known that many elderly persons among Germany's 20 million retirees felt ashamed and did not submit formal applications for basic assistance to their local authorities.

The chairman of the AWO workers' charity, Wolfgang Stadler, said without reform of Germany's pension system, which is funded by monthly transfers from employers and employees, Germany would end up with millions dependent on basic welfare assistance.

Metropolitan poverty

The statistics bureau based in Wiesbaden said German retirees classed as impoverished lived mainly in larger cities.

On average across Germany, 3 percent of all retirees drew basic welfare allowances. In Hamburg the level was 6.2 percent; in Berlin 5.3 percent, it said.

Last week, the tabloid "Bild" featured a DGB survey that indicated that 42 percent of employees in Germany assumed that on retirement their statutory pensions would be insufficient to make ends meet.

More than two-thirds said they had little or no entitlements to supplementary pensions that some employees accumulate during their working lives.
