Pope condemns idolatry of cash in capitalism

Head of Catholic church condemns economic system and calls for society with people, not money, at its heart

Pope Francis has called for a global economic system that puts people and not "an idol called money" at its heart, drawing on the hardship of his immigrant family as he sympathised with unemployed workers in a part of Italy that has suffered greatly from the recession.

Addressing about 20,000 people in the Sardinian capital of Cagliari, the Argentinian pontiff said that his parents had "lost everything" after they emigrated from Italy and that he understood the suffering that came from joblessness.

"Where there is no work, there is no dignity," he said, in ad-libbed remarks after listening to three locals, including an unemployed worker who spoke of how joblessness "weakens the spirit". But the problem went far beyond the Italian island, said Francis, who has called for wholesale reform of the financial system.

"This is not just a problem of Sardinia; it is not just a problem of Italy or of some countries in Europe," he said. "It is the consequence of a global choice, an economic system which leads to this tragedy; an economic system which has at its centre an idol called money."

The 76-year-old said that God had wanted men and women to be at the heart of the world. "But now, in this ethics-less system, there is an idol at the centre and the world has become the idolater of this 'money-god'," he added.

Sardinia, one of Italy's autonomous regions with a population of 1.6 million, has suffered particularly badly during the economic crisis, with an unemployment rate of 20%, eight points higher than the national average, and youth unemployment of 51%.

Last summer the island's hardship became national news when Stefano Meletti, a 49-year-old miner, slashed his wrists on television during a protest aimed at keeping the Carbosulcis coal mine open.

Urging people not to give up hope even in the harsh economic climate, Francis also called on them to fight back against the "throwaway culture" he said was a by-product of a global economic system that cared only about profit. It was, he said, a culture that saw the most vulnerable society become marginalised.

"Grandparents are thrown away and young people are thrown away," he said. "And we must say no to this throwaway culture. We must say: 'We want a fair system; a system that allows everyone to move forward.' We must say: 'We do not want this globalised economic system that does so much harm.' At the centre has to be man and woman, as God wants – not money."

His own father, he recalled, had suffered great hardship after moving from northern Italy to Argentina in the 1920s. He went "a young man … full of illusions" of making it in the new world, but soon found there was no work to be had. "I didn't see it; I had not yet been born. But I heard of this hardship at home … I know it well," said Francis.

There was a point in time when humanity almost stumbled, by the way. You were having a hard time with electricity. So a man came along who was way ahead of his time and was available and his name was Nikola Tesla. He gave you a principle that today you call alternating current. Dear ones, I challenge you to understand this principle. Most of you can't, because it is not in 3D. The attributes are still considered "genius-level thinking" to this day. The whole idea of the kind of electricity you use today comes from this man's quantum mind.

That was all he was allowed to do. Tesla himself was a kind of time capsule, delivered at the right time. He had more, but alternating current was all that was allowed to be given to the planet at that time. Oh, he tried to give you more. He knew there were other things, but nothing was able to be developed. If I told you what else he had discovered, you might not be aware of it at all, since it was never allowed to get out of the box. Earth was not ready for it.

Tesla discovered massless objects. He could alter the mass of atomic structure using designer magnetics, but he never could control it. He had objects fly off his workbench and hit the ceiling, but he couldn't duplicate or control it. It just wasn't time yet. Do you know what else he was known for? It was seemingly the failure of the transmission of electricity. However, he didn't fail at all.

There are pictures of his tower, but every time a Human Being sees a tower, there is a biased assumption that something is going to be broadcast through the air. But in the case of Tesla, he had figured out how to broadcast electricity through the ground. You need towers for that because they have to pick up the magnetics within the ground in a certain way to broadcast them and then collect them again from the nodes of the planet's magnetic grid system. We talked about this before. He was utilizing the grid of the planet that is in the earth itself! He was on the edge of showing that you could use the whole grid of the planet magnetically to broadcast electricity and pick it up where you need it, safely, with no wires. But the earth was not ready for it.

Tesla died a broken man, filled with ideas that would have brought peace to planet Earth, but he was simply not allowed to give any of them to you.

Now I'll tell you why he was stopped, dear ones, and it's the first time we have ever told you – because these inventions were too easy to weaponize. Humanity just isn't ready for it. You're not ready for massless objects, either, for the principles are too easy to weaponize.

"So," you might say, "when will we be ready for it?" I think you already know the answer, don't you? At the time when Human consciousness reaches a point where that which is most important is unification and not separation, it will happen. A point where conquering and power are not desirable ideas or assets. A point where humanity will measure the strength of its population by how healthy they are and not by economic growth. A point where coming together with your neighbor is the main objective to social consciousness, and not conquering them or eliminating them. That's coming, dear ones. It's a ways away, but it's coming. Look around the planet at the moment. The old energy leaders are obvious, are they not? It's like they are relics in a world of thinking that is passing them by.  ….”

Seven billion people and climbing, but not everywhere

More than 7,057,608,000 are expected to be alive on earth by the end of World Population Day this Wednesday. The global population is still growing overall, but demographic discrepancies are widening.

More than 7 billion people inhabit planet earth, with the overall growth continuing unabated on World Population Day.

According to figures from DSW, the German world population foundation, the number of people on earth rises by 2.6 per second, 158 per minute, over 225,000 per day, or almost 83 million per year.

Modern population growth is fueled primarily by Africa, Asia and Latin America, while populations are steady - or even sinking - in much of Europe.

DSW estimates that the number of people in Africa will increase more than threefold this century, reaching around 3.5 billion.

A spokeswoman for the DSW foundation, Ute Stallmeister, told the dapd news agency that this was largely owing to the number of unplanned births in Africa. World leaders will convene in the British capital on Wednesday for the London Summit on Family Planning, which hopes to raise $4 billion (3.25 billion euros) to give an additional 120 million women access to contraception by 2020.

The UN estimates that 220 million women in the developing world do not want children, but also cannot access contraception. The cause has attracted high-profile patrons such as Microsoft mogul Bill Gates.

"Because we didn't have contraception or family planning on the agenda, we weren't putting new money into it," Gates said in an interview with the Reuters news agency. "We weren't saying this is a priority. So this is our moment in time to say this is a priority and we need to fund it."

Countries like Germany, on the other hand, are dealing with lower birth rates and higher life expectancies, with the population dropping slightly even after being bolstered by immigration.

"It's a challenge of historic dimensions, because the number of people of employment age will drop by about 30 percent by 2050," social scientist Steffen Kröhner told Germany's ARD broadcaster in an interview. "I wouldn't class it as a catastrophe. But we will have to say farewell to a lot of things, not least the idea of perpetually increasing wealth. And we will need to come up with totally new ways of thinking when it comes to pensions, healthcare, and infrastructure in more sparsely populated rural areas."

Springtime is here, at least in this part of the world. Can you update us on how the honeybees are doing - is Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD) still on the rise? - Elisabeth M. Salzburg, Austria

"Bee and other pollinator populations have been in decline for decades, particularly on the North American continent. Colony Collapse Disorder is a sophisticated name, but it basically describes an inability on the part of pollinators to adjust to large-scale agriculture as quickly as humanity would prefer. No specific disease or affliction will be identified, though many will be suggested. Declines will continue, but at a less alarming rate. Other agricultural issues will soon present more alarming problems and farming in general will be challenged for the foreseeable future. Smaller farming concerns will suggest a return to a more moderate crop yield, but this will not feed a hungry world. Nearly half of the world's harvestable food supply is lost each year, most of it due to less than favorable techniques and delivery of such precious resources. Innovations in the field of landscape management will eventually heal the rift between man and nature and bounty will return."

I have heard that you have been channeling for twenty years. Does that have an effect on your physical health? When you meet someone, do you automatically "see" and "know" with Gaia's awareness as well as your own? - Phee K.P, Singapore

I am probably healthier today than I was years ago before I began channeling. Channeling is not physically demanding but my body prefers to be supported by better nutrition, especially when traveling or channeling for many hours or many days. Over time I have learned when enough is enough and when rest is appropriate. Too much of a good thing is still too much and as with almost everything, our bodies are excellent gauges.

When I meet people, I see exactly what they want to "show" me -- sometimes a lot and sometimes very little. I am very sensitive to the importance of privacy, even on the subtle planes. Gaia is a vast living library of knowledge. I do not see or know what Gaia does, but insights are always available and somehow ready -- before I have thought of a question the answer is already there. I have a healthy respect for the boundaries between my human life and the wisdom that is Gaia.

After learning that the bailed-out banks that benefited from public funds are now poised to hand out fat bonuses, Americans are furious. In a Bloomberg poll, 70 percent of respondents said that the bonuses should not be issued—and in Washington, no one is more upset than rank-and-file Republicans.

A national poll by Bloomberg shows that 70 percent of Americans say bonuses should be banned this year at banks that were bailed out by the federal government. One in six respondents say bonuses in excess of $400,000 should be taxed at a rate of 50 percent.

Banks had their best two-year period ever in 2009 and 2010, according to a Bloomberg analysis of revenue growth. It found that 2010 is likely to be the second-best year in banking history, thanks to strong equity underwriting and stock and bond trading. The gains reflect the fact that the banks are flush with cheap money from their $135 billion in bailouts, as well as the Fed's policy of stimulating the economy with cheap interest rates.

Meanwhile, the unemployment rate has crept back up to 9.8 percent and the pace of economic recovery is still too slow to alleviate that rate any time soon.

On Capitol Hill, the divergent paths of Wall Street and Main Street seems to bother Republicans more than anyone else. Generally disposed toward keeping regulation to a minimum, the massive government intervention in financial markets has rankled the GOP. According to Bloomberg, 76 percent of Republicans oppose this year's banker bonuses at bailed out institutions. That is higher than the rate of opposition among Democrats or independents, Bloomberg says.

Washington (CNN) -- Toward the end of U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's surprise appearance at the TED Women conference Wednesday, she told the story of a girl and her father in a developing country.

"This teenage girl's father expected to force her into early marriage, but she had been to school and she received a cow, perhaps through the Heifer project, to encourage her to stay in school. When her father demanded she drop out of school and get married, she said no. When he insisted, she insisted right back.

"And finally she pulled out her trump card: 'If I leave and get married, I'm taking my cow, that cow belongs to me.' So guess what. She stayed in school, she was spared an early marriage, all because her father couldn't bear to part with the cow."

Clinton devoted her talk to the importance of empowering women and girls around the world, and the audience of 700 at the International Trade Center responded enthusiastically.

"Let women work and they drive economic growth across all sectors. Send a girl to school even just for one year and her income dramatically increases for life, and her children are more likely to survive and her family more likely to be healthier for years to come. Give women equal rights and entire nations are more stable and secure. Deny women equal rights and the instability of nations is almost certain."

Clinton said the goal of empowering women and girls is a "central tenet" of American foreign policy.

"Women's equality is not just a moral issue, it's not just a humanitarian issue, it is not just a fairness issue," she said, "It is a security issue, it is a prosperity issue, and it is a peace issue.

"Therefore when I talk about why we need to integrate women's issues into discussions at the highest levels everywhere in the world, I'm not doing it just because I have a personal commitment or because President Obama cares about it. I'm doing it because it's in the vital interests of the United States of America."

Clinton said the status of women will be a key part of a new document the State Department is planning to release this week. Modeled on the Defense Department's review every four years of U.S. defenses, the "quadrennial diplomacy and development review" will assess American foreign policy.

Clinton spoke of an array of initiatives and programs the State Department is using, many involving technology that can empower women. Among them is a program in the wartorn Democratic Republic of Congo that enables women who are the victims of violence to record and transmit their testimony in criminal cases through the use of mobile phones.

Clinton's talk did not mention the ongoing worldwide controversy over the release of thousands of U.S. diplomatic cables by WikiLeaks. She did pay tribute to Elizabeth Edwards, who died the day before her talk.

"She lived with a fierce intelligence, a passion, a sense of purpose," Clinton said. "She would have appreciated this event, where we are coming together to look for solutions."

The TED Women conference was a new event organized by TED, a nonprofit that runs conferences and makes talks available on its website, and by the Paley Center for Media.

Clinton said the effort to empower women and girls faces cultural barriers: "The low value that many families and societies place on girls makes possible many of the worst abuses they suffer. But even among girls who are spared the worst, too often it is a girl who is still the first to drop out of school, the last to be fed, the last to receive medical care. And in too many places, she is taught there are special limits to what is possible for her.

"We need to reach out to faith leaders and community leaders to change the perception and treatment of girls, and to persuade men and boys to value their sisters and their daughters, their talents and their intrinsic worth."

Aliens DO exist (or so half the British public believes)

A poll of more than 2,000 adults found that 44 per cent are of the opinion extra-terrestrial life exists.

Men have the most faith in alien beings, with 46 per cent of those surveyed for the Royal Society, the country’s most prestigious scientific body, claiming that we are not alone in the universe.

And interest in ‘life but not as we know it’ does not end there, with more than a third of those questioned saying we should be actively trying to make contact with ET.

But that mission is made all the more difficult because opinion is divided on exactly what we’re looking for.

Professor Simon Conway Morris, a Cambridge University expert on evolution, said: ‘It might be that perhaps many centuries in the future we come back from an exhibition and give something to a mineralogist and he rings us up the next day and says, “By the way, you’ve just brought back an alien.”

‘In other words, it may be so different from what we expect that we have to throw away all our preconceptions.’

Reach out: A third of people questioned said we
should actively be trying to make contact with aliens

However, Professor Morris believes that ET will follow many of the same evolutionary rules as humans.

He added: ‘Life really has to follow the water and it also has to be based on carbon.

‘I am taking a gamble but I do think that when we do detect alien life, and it may be centuries away, it will be strikingly and embarrassingly like us.’

Others believe that aliens may have already visited.

Paul Davies, a British-born professor of cosmology at Arizona State University, said: ‘Sometime in the last billion years, it is not impossible that an alien artefact came this way, or even an alien exploration, even a colonisation wave that decided it wasn’t going to stay here forever.’

And it seems more of us have our head in the clouds than we might let on.

Just 28 per cent of those polled by YouGov said they didn’t believe in extra-terrestrial life – with the remaining 28 per cent admitting they simply couldn’t be sure.

Wikileaks plans to release classified U.S. diplomatic cables revealing corruption allegations against foreign governments and leaders, says a Reuters report quoting sources.

The whistle-blowing website said in Twitter messages early this week that it would soon release 2.8 million secret papers, not specifying the nature or subject of these documents. This is the third in a sequence after its first release of 77,000 secret papers on the Afghan War in July, folowed by 400,000 Pentagon reports on the Iraq war in October.

To be precise, the report says politicians from Russia, Afghanistan and former Soviet republics will be featured in the leaks, suggesting a major embarrassment to these leaders.

Essentially, the nature of next round of leaks, which everyone is trying to take a shot well in advance, is widening with many nations in the world set to await them. Does it mean, Wikileaks is likely to come under pressure in other nations too?

In another Twitter message, one reader suggests that the leaks would contain the UFO (Unidentified Flying Object) reports, which the Pentagon is not making open despite repeated pleas from the pro-UFO forums.

On its part, WikiLeaks said, "The Pentagon is hyperventilating again over fears of being held to account."

However, the US government has reportedly issued fresh warnings about the perceived dangers to its allies and other governments on possible leaks of diplomatic papers.
