Greetings, dear ones, I am Kryon of Magnetic Service. The group has practiced coherence today, and each time that occurs in a meeting of this kind, it opens the channelling for greater subjects of love.

The question was asked today: “Can a group help the coherence of one who sits before it, who is not in coherence?” The answer is, yes. So, if you can extend this whole idea of communicated coherence, I’ll tell you that, although it would appear to be a linear process, it’s far bigger than you think.

Group coherence, when scientifically measured, is where the individuals in the group are of like mind and a similar emotional state. Today, you just went through the actual measurement of those attributes. Imagine, for a moment, having many people in coherence and thinking about the same thing. It’s almost like you have a radio broadcasting station and, suddenly, it goes way beyond what you think it could. It's not a linear broadcast.

The Power of Coherent Balance

Coherence has a propensity to create a greater coherence. This effect hasn’t really been measured, where one group goes into coherence and another group somewhere else receives it. Coherence is, therefore, an energy that, by its purity, can build on itself. When you start having focused coherence, you start to see that others fall into that same coherence far easier because of those in coherence next to them. It may even seem contagious.

This is a premise, dear ones, that we have given you in metaphysics that says that balance broadcasts balance. True balance of consciousness creates energy. When you have one balanced individual in a group of those who are not, or among chaos, that individual is not just one among many, but rather, it’s like he has generated light in a dark place. People begin to feel the one who is balanced, and their own reaction to that balance then reates other balance. Many times, coherence creates more of itself without any conversation at all, and you start to see the power of the created synchronicity that we have called coherence.

This is only one attribute of many, which is starting to occur on this planet. We told you about another one: We said that light begets light. This means that the light of high consciousness actually creates more of itself in a way that you’re not aware of, and that this attribute is not yet explainable to you. If you look at the example of a Lightworker creating light in a dark place, what you start to see is that light doesn’t stay in one place. It’s not linear or local, like an object or liquid would be. Light goes everywhere all at once. In a dark room, when someone lights a match, everyone can see a little better. So it doesn’t just benefit the one who lit the match. Then, eventually, others light a match because they see that the one who has lit the first match can see far better than before – they can see their situation better in the light. Pretty soon, others get the idea, and more and more can see better. As we’ve said so many times in these last thirty years: “If you can see one another better, then you’re not afraid of each other.”

The fear that has happened on this planet has been generated from those who can’t see the other one, and who “surrounds the wagons,” as they say, to protect assets and resources because they don’t know about the other cultures or societies, or even their own neighbors. They can’t “see” them, so they fear them. However, when you can see each other, you can see they are just like you. You can see that humanity has so much in common and even, perhaps, you worship the same beautiful Creator. Perhaps it’s in different ways, but when you can see that you all understand the “image of God,” you begin to relax.

The Influence of Technology

What would happen if you had that kind of coherence on the planet, even marginally? What would happen if you started to see one another better, and that formerly dark room, which is humanity, started to be illuminated? When you began to actually see one another, what would that be like? The answer is revelation, and it has already begun.

Did you realize that the invention of what you call the Internet seems to correspond with all of the things we began to tell you about in our 1989 arrival of Kryon? The Internet, dear ones, has allowed so many people on this planet to see you, and you to see them. The new Social Media that is being used by hundreds of millions of people is all about seeing beyond borders, and, for the first time, actually viewing how other cultures live. This, therefore, allows for revelation because of their similarities. That’s a different paradigm on this planet from any other time in history. It’s a revelation about humanity itself.

There are those who say, “Well, this whole technology explosion is dangerous to us. It actually takes away from the socialization of individuals with individuals.” If that’s you, then perhaps you are not appreciating the bigger picture? For the first time on the planet, cultures are looking at each other directly, instead of simply listening to their leaders regarding who they should or should not fear. Young people all over the world are starting to see other young people in foreign lands. They are doing this, not as individual to individual, but en masse – by the millions. They are beginning to realize that others are not as they were told.

When you can tune in and talk to regular people in country after country after country, you start to see something, and you get a coherence of understanding. There is the realization that you all want the same thing! What would happen if you dedicated a day or two to just understanding one another? Perhaps you would call it “Understanding Day,” where the whole idea would be to put yourself in a place of compassionate understanding with people in foreign places.

Let’s say you could do that. In that day, in that moment, if you could then poll every Human and ask them this question: “Can you ever see a reason for the horror of war?” What do you think the answer would be? [Audience answers with a “NO!”] That’s correct. They’d all say no, overwhelmingly, overwhelmingly! Then you’d start to understand the dysfunction of what war does and how a few can affect the many. Then you begin to realize how the powerful can override those who are not, and you start to realize how your Internet has changed everything. It lets you see into the hearts of those you never knew before. It’s an example, dear ones, of technology that's ready for its time. It’s an example that perhaps not all technology is bad. It requires that a balance is needed of technology and humanism. It’s all part of the evolvement of humanity using the tools at hand … and more is coming.

What is the Fast-Track to Enlightenment?

In this group [of seminar attendees], questions have been answered today, but other questions haven’t even been asked yet. One of the questions that has not been asked out loud is this: “What’s the fast-track to enlightenment?” And here is the answer: It’s the ability to sit down and be loved – the ability to sit down and be loved. In that state, information flows to you from your own library within.

This is information that I have given many times in different ways, and it speaks of your own life history, and it starts with the mother. Those were the early days that many of you can’t remember – of being cuddled and held and loved and taken care of. There was nothing like it, nothing like it! All the chemistry was there – of perfect, unconditional love.

Too Smart to Want to Look?

You don’t have to be smart or intelligent or evolved, dear ones, to understand love. You just don’t. You don’t have to have intellectual understanding of consciousness to be loved. You just don’t. That same care and love of MOTHER is pouring at you right now, right now, from the Creative Source. It’s pouring at you! However, there’s an invisible shield that keeps it away and it bounces right off this self-created barrier. This shield keeps all that caring and love from being seen and felt, and you can give it as many names as you want, but the shield is strong – so much so that you don’t even know that love is even there! You can call this shield lack of belief or the fear of change. You can also be “trained out of it” by those you trust. Or you can be too “smart” to be interested in such odd things as metaphysics.

What about a metaphysical shield? A spiritual shield? Can you be fully engulfed in the study of energy and still have this shield? Yes. We will call it “intellectual metaphysics.” This is where someone is so involved in the mysteries of metaphysics and all the energy, that they never feel the love. They are just too much into the minutia of how things work to stop and be loved. Ask yourself. Are you really, really interested in all the mystery school information, and how energy may have been developed with consciousness of the past, and all the mysterious historical structures and what they mean … but you don’t really want to listen to Kryon? That’s a shield. You want everything but the love. Yet, the love is the answer to a much more balanced and healthy life. You want to cook the meal over and over but never eat it. You study gourmet cooking, then dash out to eat fast food.

Isn't it time to stop that shield? How about finally recognizing it and simply dropping it? Say it: Fear of Truth is keeping you where you are.

An Exercise

Can you forget everything you were taught just for a minute? Right or wrong, or black and white – and just sit there? If you could do this, the shields will come dropping down for a moment. Do you dare ask yourself, “What if everything I thought I knew or was told is simply the 3D version of multiple-D. What if everything I thought and believed was in black and white, and there is color everywhere.”?

If you can get to “neutral,” even for a moment, in comes the love of God and starts the lesson: This is what compassion is like. This is what love is like. Emulate it; be it. Understand it. This is the revelation of those who have been there. Even the highest scientists, engineers, and politicians have experienced this. It’s not just for the few. If you can go to that place, then you start understanding how to arrange and balance your beliefs and how to arrange your metaphysics and how to react to energy. Then your entire world starts to expand.

The Self Shield

How many of you were told that you had to build a shield around yourself to keep certain things from happening? Well, I will tell you what it often does: It keeps you from being loved because you’ve got a shield of fear. You think you’re shielding the darkness, but you’re shielding everything, including balance. Did you know that? Don’t you feel that? There are so many, even in this group now and listening later, who still don’t truly understand – still don’t understand how to sit and be loved. They worry, even about their own belief system! “Am I doing it right? Am I doing it wrong?” They worry about dark energy, as though they had no light at all within themselves to change it. Many actually make up things to enhance the worry, because it’s a habit. They often get “worry support groups” going.

If you can sit there and be loved just for a moment, everything starts to snap into balance. It can rewrite your old program of what you think is important if you will allow it. We’ve said this before: This is the goal. If you want to know what enlightenment is, and you want to know about real truth, sit and be loved. The information will come directly from the “image of God” inside you – unblocked by the shield of unbelief.

The Masters who walked this planet had a lot of followers. While the Masters walked the planet, and for generations later, many of the followers would get together and decide the meanings to be gleaned from what the Masters said and did. They also decided what rules should be built around their lives. However, one rule was quite often missed. Emulate these Masters. That’s what they came here for. When they would do miraculous things and when they taught about love, emulate this. The Masters personified love. Emulate this.

Today, there is a different energy on this planet. It’s starting to shift in consciousness away from the darkness. Be aware that your media is not showing it, for your media is part of the worry machine. The real media of light is your coherence, balance, and emulation of the Masters. For that creates light that goes everywhere.

We are asking each one of you to take the mantle of a kind of mastery if you wish. It’s where you can emulate the Creator with your consciousness and your Higher-Self, and it becomes an integration where you can stand up anywhere in society and be peaceful. People will be attracted to you. And when they ask you about your inner quietness, you’re not going to give them a doctrine. Instead, you’re going to give them love. What a concept. What a concept! You are going to give them time, compassion, and understanding.

You’re going to give them a compassion that’s infectious! It’s healing and joyful! There are those who will simply want to walk with you because they feel safe with you. Disease won’t be attracted to you because you’re balanced and you’re broadcasting it! Sound too esoteric? Ask a doctor: Does fear, unbalance, and stress create disease? Should I tell you that this shield of yours is a leading factor that allows disease? Are you getting the truth of this?

When they ask you how you balance, you can say, it’s all about the release of fear and embracing a greater love concept of who the Creator is. Tell them you are aware that you are here on purpose, and not a victim of the planet. Tell them you are actually experiencing it! Listen: You don’t have to give them a Kryon book! Just tell them about yourself, and how you feel, and how it has changed you.

So many of you know and have seen what laughter can do and how it actually creates more laughter. In a group, when one person is laughing for a time, it will eventually catalyze all of them laughing. That’s what we’re talking about. That’s the attribute of light. That’s the beautiful part of compassion and joy. Laughter is a consciousness and isn’t just an emotion or a cause-and-effect chemical attribute. It’s beautiful and sends great healing energy to those around you.

The Unusual and Odd Lightworker

We say again, that there are those Lightworkers who chase away others because they are so aggressive with their unusualness. Many are very proud of this. Ask them: “Are you aware that you are so unusual that you chase away people?” and they will say, “Yes, that’s my task. I have to be unusual to hold the energy of this planet.” Being unusual and odd and holding the energy of the planet was the staple of Lightworkers in a much older energy. Now, it’s not that way.

That was then, and this is now. In this new energy, you have thousands who are joyful and spreading light. They are no longer just holding energy. They are HOLDING and SPREADING IT! Once you understand the difference between the old planetary energy and the new energy, I’ll tell you what the revelation is: You’re going to hold the energy of the planet tenfold, and spread your energy with some joy and balance. You never were more powerful!

Gone are the days where you have to be strange to believe in metaphysics. Today, I will redefine metaphysics: It is the study of energy beyond what it was defined as before. It is now the study of the higher energies of BALANCE and COHERENCE.

Perhaps somebody may ask you what you believe in. You might tell them gently, “I believe in beautiful energies that surround me; I believe in angels. I believe that there are processes of God we don’t understand that are able to work with our lives.” Dear ones, if you do this in balance and love, many are going to say, “Tell me more.” They are not going to run the other way.

That’s the difference today – Lightworker, Old Soul. That’s the difference.

My partner represents a belief system that often seems to be odd and weird and strange – and it’s time to change that. You can take the truth of the energy that you’ve carried all these years and balance it and be beautiful to the planet. Beautiful! The result is that people will be attracted to your love and compassion and balance, and you won’t appear to be strange or weird. The Masters did not appear to be odd or strange. They appeared to be powerful and balanced – and when they sat and taught, nobody ran the other way. Their words were kind and soft and beautiful and wise and healing. Now, that’s you.

Welcome to a new age, a real new age. This is not an evangelistic point of view, but rather, one where light is attractive and compassion even more attractive. Balance is kind, and that’s why you’re here.

Saudi Arabia executes top Shiite cleric

Riyadh (AFP) - Sunni Muslim Saudi Arabia executed Saturday a prominent Shiite cleric, who had been behind anti-government protests, drawing angry condemnation from Shiite-majority Iran and Iraq.

Nimr al-Nimr was executed along with 46 other men, including Shiite activists and Sunnis accused of involvement in Al-Qaeda killings, the interior ministry said.

It prompted calls for demonstrations, but the brother of the 56-year-old cleric called for calm in oil-rich Eastern Province where Shiites complain of marginalisation.

"This action will spark anger of (Shiite) youths" in Saudi Arabia, but "we reject violence and clashing with authorities", said Mohammed al-Nimr.

The interior ministry said the 47 men had been convicted of adopting the radical "takfiri" ideology, joining "terrorist organisations" and implementing various "criminal plots".

A list published by the official SPA news agency included Sunnis convicted of involvement in Al-Qaeda attacks that killed Saudis and foreigners in 2003 and 2004.

Some of them had been convicted of taking part in May 2003 attacks on expatriate compounds in Riyadh that killed 35 people, nine of them Americans, the ministry said.

Others were involved in attacks the following year on a housing complex in the eastern city of Khobar, in which 22 people were killed, most of them foreigners, and other assaults.

Among them was Fares al-Shuwail, described by Saudi media as Al-Qaeda's top religious leader in the kingdom.

Notably absent from the list, was Nimr's nephew, Ali. He was arrested at the age of 17 and allegedly tortured during detention before being sentenced to die, sparking fury from rights watchdogs and the United States.

All those executed were Saudis, except for an Egyptian and a Chadian.

Some were beheaded with a sword while others were shot by firing squad, said ministry spokesman Mansur al-Turki.

Executions have soared in the country since King Salman ascended the throne last January, with 153 people put to death in 2015, nearly twice as many as in 2014.

'Oppression and execution'

Saturday's executions were condemned by Iran and Iraq as well as the Lebanese Shiite movement Hezbollah, and drew protest calls.

"The Saudi government supports terrorist movements and extremists, but confronts domestic critics with oppression and execution," said Hossein Jaber Ansari, spokesman for Iran's foreign ministry.

It will "pay a high price for following these policies," the official IRNA news agency quoted him as saying.

Turki described Iran's reaction as "irresponsible".

"We are completely confident with what we're doing and we believe in it and do not care how others view our procedures, whether on justice or implementation of sentences," he said.

Tehran ally Hezbollah said Saudi Arabia's rulers are "global criminals" and denounced Nimr's execution as a "heinous crime".

Saudi justice ministry spokesman Mansur al-Qafari said "interference in the kingdom's judiciary is unacceptable".

Rights groups have repeatedly raised concern about the fairness of trials in Saudi Arabia, where murder, drug trafficking, armed robbery, rape and apostasy are all punishable by death.

Trial standards 'grossly flouted'

Amnesty International's Middle East and North Africa director Philip Luther told AFP the kingdom was using "the guise of counter-terrorism" to clamp down on dissent.

The trials "were politicised on the one hand and grossly unfair, because the international standards for fair trial were grossly flouted."

Iran's Basij student militia, connected to the country's elite Revolutionary Guards, called for a demonstration Sunday outside the Saudi embassy in Tehran.

In Saudi ally Bahrain, police used tear gas to disperse dozens of youths from the majority Shiite population protesting the executions.

And prominent Iraqi Shiite lawmaker Khalaf Abdelsamad called for the closure of Riyadh's embassy and urged the government to expel its ambassador.

"The execution of Sheikh al-Nimr will have serious consequences and bring about the end of the Al-Saud (royal family's) rule," his office said.

In Yemen, where the kingdom is leading a coalition against Shiite rebels, the religious scholars association controlled by them condemned the execution.

Mormon church excommunicates man who ran forum for doubting members

A Mormon man who gained notoriety over the past decade for running a website that offers doubting Latter-day Saints a forum to chat has been kicked out of the church.

John Dehlin announced the decision from regional church leaders Tuesday. He becomes the second high-profile church member to be excommunicated in the past year in what Mormon scholars consider to be the Utah-based faith’s way of keeping dissenters in line.

  

A regional church leader in North Logan told Dehlin in a letter that Mormon officials made a unanimous decision to excommunicate him for apostasy, defined by the church as repeatedly acting in clear public opposition to the faith.

While not a lifelong ban, excommunication is still a rare move that amounts to the harshest punishment available for a church member.

The letter from Bryan King says Dehlin is being kicked out not because he doubted and asked questions about church doctrine, but because he made categorical statements opposing the faith that were disseminated on his website. King wrote that Dehlin’s actions have led others to leave the faith.

“I acknowledge your right to criticize the church and its doctrines and to try to persuade others to your cause,” King writes. “But you do not have the right to remain a member of the church in good standing while openly and publicly trying to convince others that church teachings are in error.”

The decision comes two days after Dehlin met with church leaders in a four-hour disciplinary hearing.

Dehlin, 45, hoped he wouldn’t be excommunicated but told church leaders he could not in good conscience stop operating his website, Mormonstories.org.

Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints spokesman Eric Hawkins said in an email that the church might comment later. Church leaders have not publicly discussed the specifics of Dehlin’s case.

The move is likely to send ripples through the Mormon community. It comes on the heels of the June ouster of Kate Kelly, founder of a group pushing for women to be allowed in the religion’s lay clergy.

Scholars say Kelly and Dehlin are the most high-profile examples of excommunication proceedings since 1993. That year, the church disciplined six Mormon writers who questioned church doctrine, ousting five and kicking out a sixth temporarily.

To supporters, Dehlin is a hero who has risked his standing in the faith to create a much-needed forum where church members could openly discuss sensitive or controversial issues about the faith. About 200 supporters held a vigil for Dehlin on Sunday night outside the church building where his disciplinary hearing took place.

To his detractors, Dehlin is a Latter-day Saint who long stopped believing in the faith’s core tenets and has orchestrated and manipulated his situation to be ousted and earn more attention.

“Dehlin’s choices forced his local leaders to take steps to protect their adherents from one who not only ceased to believe, but who actively sought to have others embrace his disbelief,” said Scott Gordon, co-founder of MormonVoices, an organization that supports the LDS church.

Dehlin is a married father of four who has been a Latter-day Saint his entire life. He is a doctoral candidate in psychology who previously worked in the high-tech industry.

It will be suggested to let women participate in services, doing things women did not do before. This graduates them within church law to an equality with priests, but doesn't actually let them become priests just yet. However, don't be surprised if this begins in another way, and instead gives priests the ability to marry. This will bring the feminine into the church in other ways. It will eventually happen and has to happen. If it does not, it will be the end of the Catholic Church, for humanity will not sustain a spiritual belief system that is out of balance with the love of God and also out of balance with intuitive Human awareness.  …”

Manama: Saudi and Gulf citizens have heaped praise on a man who placed a refrigerator in front of his house in the northern Saudi city of Hail and invited people to donate food to help the needy.

The open air donation would spare the needy the “shame” of asking for food, the man, who was not named, said.

The move came to national and international attention after a religious scholar, Shaikh Mohammad Al Araifi, paid tribute on his Twitter account to “the Saudi man from Hail who was engaged in an indirect act of charity.”

Writing under the moniker of “Sniper”, an online user applauded the “simple, but far-reaching idea.”

“That is exactly what we needed: A simple, but bright idea that goes a long way in helping people,” Sniper posted. “The idea should now be adopted and all large mosques in the country should place fridges to take and distribute food,” he said.

Another blogger, Abdul Rahman, went further by suggesting “the smart idea should be applied in front of all houses.”

“It is the best way to ensure that all people have access to food,” he said.

Another commentator said that the food placed in the fridge does not have to be leftovers.

“The idea should be to develop the concept so that all kinds of food can be placed, even freshly cooked,” he said.

Salah, a Bahraini national, said that the idea should be implemented in Bahrain as the fasting month of Ramadan is about to start in the summer.

“It is a great act of charity that can make many people happy and satisfied,” he said. “There is the food factor, but there is also the spiritual dimension, especially during the sacred month when people engage deeply in acts of charily,” he said.

Ramadan, the month during which Muslim adults abstain from food, drink and sex from sunrise until sunset to test their patience, is expected to start on June 28.

Finding an Inner ‘Light’ Through Tarot Cards

The participants in the tarot workshop choose from a row of overturned cards at random. Grouped in pairs, they take turns interpreting three or four of their partners’ cards to gain insights on their past, present and future.

The point of the activity is as practical as it is mystical; participants seek to find solutions to their problems and shortcomings. The results of their enquiries, whether it be about love, wealth or other aspects of life, are as unexpected as they are uncanny. One hand unveiled by the reader turns out to be the nine of wands, showing the subject’s determination to hold on to her loved one. Another card is the nine of pentacles, indicating the promise of prosperity for the subject.

These mystical seekers were among eight people who joined a workshop held by the Light Givers, a community specializing in reading tarot cards. Founded by digital marketing consultant Nanies Effendy and tarot reader Audifax in June 2013, the group seeks to help young people realize their potential.

“[Light Givers] believe that we are born with our share of luck, much of which we are often unaware. That luck is the ‘light’ that shines inside each and every one of us,” explains the community in its mission statement, though it added that one’s free will also determine their life’s direction, as do experiences and traumas. “We convey our program in a fun format of psychological consultation through fortune telling, whether it be tarot, zodiac, palmistry and so on. This format is accessible and has won us a thriving fan base. Most of all, we aim to help the young realize their potential, and be a place they can turn to when they face problems and feel alone.”

Since its founding, Light Givers has been offering monthly workshops costing Rp 350,000 ($30). The sessions, which can accommodate five to 12 participants, include an introduction to the 22 cards of the Major Arcana, and the 56 cards that make up the Minor Arcana. The former, which comprises well known symbols like The Lovers, The Devil and Death, symbolizes the functions of thinking, feeling, sense and intuition. On the other hand, the Minor Arcana of Wands, Cups, Swords and Pentacles are elemental, representing Fire, Water, Air and Earth.

“For many people, the first thing that comes to mind when they think tarot cards are images of superstition, fortune telling and other irrational elements. But the cards aren’t as random as they look, since they reflect both the collective and individual subconscious and how they work,” says Audiofax. “The subconscious works quicker than the conscious mind. What tarot does is train people to hone and control it.”

Fellow tarot reader Rendy Fudoh agrees with Light Givers co-founder.

“What drew me to tarot is its philosophy. When I learn about tarot cards, I can learn about everything else, such as religion, culture and other aspects of life. It gives me a better perspective about their backgrounds, much of which are shaped by the subconscious,” says the mentalist and magician, who was inspired to try his hand at tarot after reading a book on magic and mentalism by Dedy Corbuzier, an Indonesian mover in both fields.

“One can also do many things with tarot, like put together a story, perform some magic tricks, and use it for counseling. We can even use it for self hypnosis.”

Depicting symbols of the elements and emotions, tarot cards carry a psychological weight beyond their fortune telling capacities.

“Tarot cards have many practical benefits, as they predate the archetypes highlighted in Jungian psychology by thousands of years. Aside from learning about symbols and archetypes, one can also learn about ‘hierarchy,’” says tarot reader Aryo Nugroho, a practicing lawyer. “Hierarchies define people’s places in the world, whether they’re made to lead, find their style or know their place in life. The reader can also define their character through the card’s symbolism. For instance, some of my women friends identify themselves with the High Priestess and the Hierophant, since the former symbolizes the ancient Earth goddesses while the latter symbolizes faith and undisputed truths.”

One participant, Nurul, a psychology major at Tarumanegara University, was quick to perceive how the cards can change her perspective.

“The insights I gained from tarot adds a new dimension to the inner workings of the human psyche that I previously got from the study of graphology, or studying people’s handwriting. Tarot goes deeper into the subconscious, whereas graphology is wider in scope and is less detailed or in depth,” she says. “Its approach of pairing our persons with strangers help us understand ourselves and our future, as they have no preconceptions about us. I’m certain that the use of tarots will be very useful should I take graduate studies in counseling.”

The confidence Nurul gave to Light Givers is shared by thousands of others. The community’s participation in a number of events, like the 2013 Social Media Festival, University of Indonesia’s Festival Budaya or Cultural Festival, as well as Hai Day, which they often stage in cooperation with the Klub Tarot Jakarta and Tarot Institut, ensures an increasing number of enthusiasts. To date, its Twitter page @LightGivers has a following of nearly 5,600 people.

“Our tarot readers are college and high school students, who also make up most of our followers on Twitter and Facebook. Many are drawn to the tarots after they try out readings at social festivals. Other clients are executives who use the cards to uncover issues they can’t discuss with their loved ones” says Nanies. “Social media outlets help spread the word about us. However, our promotional vehicle is still through word of mouth.”

While Light Givers Corps lived up to its name and enlightened thousands of young people about tarot, the group still has its fair share of challenges.

“The practice of reading tarot cards continues to be dogged by public perceptions of it as a superstition. For instance, one person at the Social Media festival questioned our participation there, on the grounds that we’re carrying out a superstitious activity like fortune telling,” Rendy lamented. “People like these find superstition easier to believe in. Tarot works by intuition, which is far less tangible for them. They are also too lazy to learn the difference, or that tarot can be used to tackle life’s major challenges. We might as well disregard them and continue what we’re doing.”

Washington — The news media is generating some big news of its own, as a growing number of star US journalists move online, bringing followers and financial backers with them.

Online news sites have been around for years, but in recent months the trend has gained momentum, defying predictions of a troubled media industry.

The latest was the relaunch of FiveThirtyEight, headed by Nate Silver, a statistician and journalist who made his own headlines with his accurate prediction of the 2012 presidential election.

The site, which covers a range of news with a statistician's eye, is backed by the sports broadcaster ESPN, after Silver left The New York Times with his blog.

Also joining the fray was The Intercept, a news site backed by tech entrepreneur Pierre Omidyar with an editorial team led by Glenn Greenwald, the former Guardian reporter who broke news with documents leaked by former National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden.

Omidyar has pledged to invest $250 million in his First Look Media, which includes a not-for-profit news operation and a separate technology arm for new media.

The Washington Post's popular "Wonkblog" columnist Ezra Klein meanwhile left the newspaper to start a news website backed by Vox Media.

Yahoo wooed television news star Katie Couric and former New York Times tech writer David Pogue. And journalists at The Wall Street Journal-backed tech blog AllThingsD broke off in January to create Re/code, a separate website with support from Comcast's NBCUniversal.

The new energy in Internet news comes as the entrenched news industry faces deepening financial woes, and the model for online profits remains unclear.

Dying or reviving?

So is the news business dying or being reborn?

Alan Mutter, a former Chicago newspaper editor who consults for journalism and technology ventures, said that while traditional newspapers are withering, online news sites may be working.

But the digital news business is likely to be "vertical," covering a segment such as technology, sports or politics, unlike a newspaper, which aims to cover all sectors. Online news can get money from subscriptions, premium content or links to shopping, for example.

"The future of digital publishing is the antithesis of traditional publishing," Mutter told AFP.

Newspapers try to get a broad audience by offering comics, coupons and recipes, while covering news ranging from local crime to politics to walks on the moon, and online sites are changing that model.

The shift is similar to what happened in retailing, with multi-sector department stores hammered by specialty apparel, housewares or electronics stores.

"Newspapers are basically following a publishing-model mindset that is locked in 1958," Mutter said.

"They take the same content and put it on a website or put it on mobile and they say they have a digital strategy."

Low cost of entry

Ken Doctor, a media analyst with Outsell who writes the Newsonomics blog, said it has become easier to launch news sites.

"The technology has gotten much better and cheaper in the past few years," Doctor said.

"And once you create the content, the social world is able to find new audiences at practically no incremental cost."

News startups can expand internationally and gain a far larger audience than they would with a local or even national US newspaper, he noted.

"You can ramp up one of these businesses and create a national or international brand for $5 million to $10 million," Doctor said.

Without the legacy costs of newspapers like printing, distribution and longstanding pensions, websites can become profitable relatively quickly.

While not all ventures will succeed, they are attracting venture capital because "you could double or triple your money if you pick a winner," Doctor said.

The startups are often personality driven -- Klein has 441,000 Twitter followers and Silver 680,000. Former Daily Beast journalist Andrew Sullivan got 35,000 paid subscribers for his "The Dish" blog.

'Golden age of journalism'?

"I am more bullish about the future of the news industry over the next 20 years than almost anyone I know," said a blog post by Andreessen, who founded the early Internet group Netscape Communications.

"Maybe we are entering into a new golden age of journalism, and we just haven't recognized it yet."

Andreessen said the news business is breaking free of the "monopolies and oligopolies" that controled it for much of the post-World War II era and that the Internet is allowing new businesses to get to a scale where they can support high-quality journalism.

"On the Internet, there is no limitation to the number of outlets or voices in the news chorus," he said.

The economics of online news has allowed some sites to move beyond the practice of "aggregation," and into more in-depth reporting traditionally seen as the domain for newspapers.

But analysts point out that while Internet news outlets which can gain readers nationally and internationally can thrive, the same is not true for local news organizations, which many Americans rely on for coverage of their communities.

"It's a tale of two worlds," Doctor said. "Local newspapers are still in a death spiral, with layoff after layoff."
