A Delhi-Kolkata Spice Jet flight made a “priority” landing at the Kolkata airport on Wednesday afternoon after a burqa-clad Russian woman travelling on the flight drew the attention of the crew for her “suspicious behaviour.”
After the emergency landing, the woman and her husband were detained and questioned for a long time before being set free. A full body search was also conducted. The Russian Embassy intervened and wanted to know why the couple were detained at the airport.
According to a senior official of the Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport, the crew members of the Delhi-Kolkata flight of Spice Jet found the movement and the behaviour of a Russian couple “suspicious”. The crew members informed the captain about their suspicion which led the captain to demand an emergency landing around 12.30 pm.
“After the flight landed, the Russian couple was taken out of the flight for interrogation,” said the official. Security officials including the CISF and Bengal Police rushed to the spot to question them following which it was found that the two Russian nationals — Asal Becov Artur (58) and his wife Albai Evoafle Onara (50) — were heading to Dhaka via Kolkata. They were scheduled to board a Kolkata-Dhaka Kingfisher flight on Wednesday evening, said a senior CISF official. They have visited India seven to eight times earlier. No suspicious article was found with them, added the official.
