Dutch companies spend a lot of attention on their employees' health because they must pay for their sick leave when they become ill.
Among the tactics companies use to keep their employees healthy is to reimburse some of the costs of gym membership and ensure that company restaurants offer healthy meals.
Professor of company and sports medicine at Amsterdam's Free University, Willem van Mechelen says only employees who are already leading a healthy lifestyle profit from these measures. He says much more is needed to stimulate personnel with an unhealthy lifestyle. Firms should approach employees on a personal level and also make an effort to change the working environment. This would stimulate employees to lead a more healthy lifestyle.
