Giant Veil of "Cold Plasma" Discovered High Above Earth

Clouds ofcharged particles stretch a quarter the way to the moon, experts say.

Clouds of"cold plasma" reach from the top of Earth's atmosphere to at least aquarter the distance to the moon, according to new data from a cluster ofEuropean satellites.

Earthgenerates cold plasma—slow-moving charged particles—at the edge of space, wheresunlight strips electrons from gas atoms, leaving only their positively chargedcores, or nuclei.

Researchershad suspected these hard-to-detect particles might influence incoming space weather,such as this week's solar flare and resulting geomagnetic storm. That's becausesolar storms barrage Earth with similar but high-speed charged particles.

Still, noone could be certain what the effects of cold plasma might be without a handleon its true abundance around our planet.

"It'slike the weather forecast on TV. It's very complicated to make a reasonableforecast without the basic variables," said space scientist Mats André, ofthe Swedish Institute of Space Physics.

"Discoveringthis cold plasma is like saying, Oh gosh, there are oceans here that affect ourweather," he said.

The Trickto Finding Cold Plasma

Researchersalready knew that some cold plasma existed in the ionosphere, about 60 miles(100 kilometers) above Earth's surface. But few researchers had looked for theclouds between 12,400 and 60,000 miles (20,000 and 100,000 kilometers) high.

André andhis colleague Chris Cully suspected the plasma could be out there, but theyknew the positive charge of spacecraft wasn't helping any search efforts.

Similar tothe way cold plasma is created, sunlight strips electrons from spacecraftmaterials, making their hulls positively charged. Like two matching magneticpoles, a spacecraft would simply repulse any cold plasma around it.

To find thestuff, André and Cully instead analyzed anomalies in data from the European Space Agency's Cluster II spacecraft.

This groupof four satellites swings around Earth in a highly elliptical orbit. At theorbit's peak, the probes reach nearly halfway to the moon.

Theenormous distance gives researchers a chance to sweep through and monitorEarth's magnetic field and electrical activity, including the influence of"hot" charged particles emitted by the sun.

Anomaliesin the Cluster II data turned out to be shockwaves from cold plasma particlesmoving around the satellites.

Cold Plasmaa Space Weather "Elephant"

In the end,the pair found that cold plasma makes up between 50 and 70 percent of allcharged particles within the farther reaches of Earth's magnetic field.

André saysit's now time to start updating space-weather models to take the extra coldplasma into account—at this point, for instance, nothing is known about how theplasma might affect solar storms.

Thisinfluence is "not a minor thing in space weather," André said. "It'san elephant in the room."

Thecold-plasma study has been accepted for publication in Geophysical ResearchLetters.

This message spoke of the sun and what to expect in the days just ahead. They said there was another round of solar flares that were about to begin. I am aware that we are having them right now but they still are not the intensity and the regularity that we will have them in the next three years. The year 2012 was of particular note. They said to watch direct sun exposure during that year. Its not about how much you get but about how much you are accustomed to getting. This is the second or third channel recently where they equate gravity to magnetism but I will say that our sciences do not agree with that as of yet.

What they did say is that the sun is aligning to once again shower us with a pelt of solar flares. The events that were originally scripted to put a final end to earth are about to happen on a scaled down version with the energy redirected. In fact this coming event has all the ear-markings of the perfect storm in 2012. Only this time Scotty is yelling to Captain Kirk that the shields wont hold as the protective shields of earth known as the magnetosphere now have large holes in them and they are still full of plasma from the last attack. This means we will feel much more of the effects of these flares in our personal world and bodies. They said the emotional bodies we carry are magnetic based and they will vary the most as these fields shift. How much fun is that boys and girls? Can anyone remember why we signed up for this human thing?

Those whohave interpreted the year 2012 as the beginning of the end of darkness—nevermind the total end of the world!—have misinterpreted its significance. Most simply stated, 2012 heralds Earth’sentry into the Golden Age, and between now and then is a time of transitionfrom life as you have known it into life totally in harmony with all of Nature.

Everythingin the universe is energy vibrating at one frequency or another, and when Earthwas in prime health, in times you know but don’t remember, all of her lifeforms were vibrating harmoniously. Whenshe was near death more than six decades back, there was no harmony whatsoever,no balance of Nature—there was hardly sufficient light to sustain any kind oflife, including Earth’s own. What is happening now, with the help ofstabilizing forces, is the transformation of your world—Earth’s rejuvenationand return to balance—reaching completion in 2012.

But thatyear no longer has the “time absoluteness” it once held in prophecies, and yourcalendar cannot accurately convey when the major transitional changes will becompleted because linear time is disappearing. What you perceive as time passing faster and faster is the effect of thehigher energy planes in which you are living now, where everything is acceleratingas Earth makes her way into the continuum—or, more accurately, as yourconsciousness grasps the actuality of timelessness, the reality of eternity andinfinity. The faster, or more intensely,the light infuses Earth, the more swiftly your “time” passes as she moves stillhigher into fourth density vibrations. So, just as in this moment your calendar week is passing in less thanhalf the time of a calendar week a dozen or so years ago, 2012 will be comingincreasingly more rapidly than your current calendar can indicate.

Now then,why does that year have historic significance universally? It involves celestial orbiting cycles andtheir influences on your planet as well as life designs made in total clarityby highly evolved beings who planned Higher Universal-MAN with attributes ofspirituality and intelligence that far exceed that in today’s Earthpopulation. Opportunities to return tohigher densities have been offered in prior cycles and missed, and this timewhen the energetic alignment is again optimal, advanced civilizations areassisting so Earth’s desire to rise to her former vibratory level is assured.What happens on Earth affects the universe, so it is of utmost significance tothose advanced civilizations that the dark ages on your home planet bereconciled within the light and you knowledgeably take your rightful placeamong your universal family.

Along theway there will be many profound changes, changes you can’t even imagine, thatwill transform life as you have known it into life in total harmony with all ofNature worldwide and thusly flow out into the universe. Love, which is the same energy as LIGHT butsimply expressed differently, is the pure essence of Creator, the ultimatepower in the cosmos. This energy is thecomposition of souls and the key to opening hearts and illumining minds, and itis flowing more abundantly on Earth than ever before. As the darkness continues to fade, love willreplace conflict and tyranny with peace and cooperation; love will eliminatethe superficial superiority of one group over another; love will enlightenthose who regard others as possessions or dispensable and uplift those who havebeen subjected to living in those conditions. In short, LOVE is the power that is transforming your world.

Although nomajor strongholds of the darkness will cease abruptly, the transition will belike lightning in comparison to the long ages that violence, inequities, abusesand deceit prevailed. If you could see in parallel motion the pace of the pastmany centuries, when only intermittent flickers of light broke through thedominant darkness, and the pace of the past few decades of growing lightintensity, you would marvel at the swiftness of the changes.

Theprogressive changes have required and will continue to require the help ofextraterrestrials. Almost all of themare unknown to you except as we speak of them and in some cases, their ownmessages sent forth, yet some of the strongest, most experienced light warriorsin this universe are right there among you, working behind the scenes to guidethe essential changes so that as many as possible of Earth’s residents willaccompany her into the higher planes. This is how beloved and significant universally your planet is and howbeloved and important YOU are! Inkeeping with universal law, it is your heartfelt desire for Earth’s well beingthat is your invitation, your request to those civilizations for their help,but your bewilderment about how to heal the pervasive damage humankind haswrought also is part of their divine authorization to assist. The firstreforms are in governments. Many of thepopulace who are unaware of the ongoing transformation see governing policiesleading to the brink of planetary disaster, and even among lightworkers thereare concerns about what will happen in this critical world arena. Not only is it difficult for you to imaginesystems dramatically different from what you are accustomed to, but in reformsof the magnitude required, it is realistic to anticipate confusion andfoment. Please know that trustworthysouls with spiritual integrity and expertise in the various fields of governingare ready to take the helm and bring order as rapidly as possible as corrupt,tyrannical government leaders are unseated. A great deal of “shuffling” in theUnited States government will lead to ending its engagement in war and internaland international strife, and the unseating of other self-serving heads ofstate will end civil wars, genocide and longstanding conflict. Many wise andable leaders in previous Earth lifetimes chose to return to the planet tocomplete their groundwork for this unique time at hand, and others are membersof your “space family”—many are your ancestors—who volunteered to assist duringthis transitional period. In no way arethey there to “take over,” but rather they came in response to your thoughts,feelings and actions for peace, fairness and stability in your world. Thetransformation at hand is your desire and soul level vision—if this were notso, it could not happen. Looking evenfarther ahead, during the past decade or two some souls have come in with theadvanced spiritual clarity and ancient wisdom that will naturally put them inleadership roles.

Becausemoney is the basis not only for commerce, but even more so for concentratingpower, the need for economic reforms worldwide is as crucial as changes innational leadership. The economy asreported is more myth than actuality. Only a comparative handful of people know how tenuous and corrupt theglobal economy is or that international trade and the stock markets aremanipulated by the Illuminati, a group of darkly-inclined people who havepassed their tight global reins from generation to generation. They have amassed vast fortunes through thatcontrol as well as by charging usurious bank loan rates and accruing mammothamounts from their illegal drugs industry, and they use that money to buygovernments; bankrupt countries and exploit their natural resources; keepbillions of souls at barely subsistence level; and fund both sides in wars thatthey precipitate and perpetuate because from wars they derive handsomeprofits. This cannot continue and itwon’t. The unconscionably inequitableallocation of money in your world will end. Although I cannot give you finite details of the changeover process, Ican give you an overview and assure you that the honest, knowledgeable peoplewho will manage the process will keep disruption at a minimum as they fairlydistribute the world’s wealth.

TheIlluminati’s illegally and immorally garnered fortunes will be put into circulationand their exploitation of natural resources worldwide will end. Since that power base is what enabled them toset government and banking policies and own multinational corporations, thosecorrupt controls also will end. The huge debts of the poorest nations wereincurred by their state of desperation, often caused by Illuminati actions andinfluence; but the loans went to the despots ruling the countries and did notbenefit the citizens, so those debts will be annulled and assistance givendirectly to the people. Many national borders have been set by the victors inwar who wanted the natural resources, and that created “have-nots” who formerlywere “haves.” When the LOVE in souls ends all conflicts, borders no longer willbe cause for dispute because all peoples will be “haves.”

The coffersof the United States, which is erroneously considered the most fiscally soundnation in the world, have been empty for some time. The national debt, in largepart due to the skullduggery of the Illuminati-owned Federal Reserve System andits IRS collection agency, will become manageable when that System isdissolved. The various currencies,especially dollars, have no foundation—daily transactions involving billions ofdollars and other currencies are merely information passed from one computer toanother and they far exceed the money to back them. The “new” foundation for currencies will be areturn to an old one, where precious metals was a set standard for exchange,and “old fashioned” bartering once again will be an excellent way for nationsand communities to conduct some business.

The basisfor much of your current economy will change considerably and employment willchange accordingly, but your greater spiritual clarity and usage of braincapacity in the higher frequencies will enable a joyful transition into fieldsthat support cooperation among nations and harmony with Nature. The wantondestruction of your environment through oil and gas extraction, mining, loggingand their resultant pollution will cease and all types of toxins in theatmosphere, soil and water will be eliminated. Forests will be restored to thelevels required for the balance of Nature, and the need is great as well topreserve and expand habitats where animals have been reduced to countablenumbers, just as the oceans must be returned to health so marine life canflourish instead of disappear. There are plans to achieve those goals as wellas keep pristine land areas free of concrete incursions and implementalternative power sources. Technologies known but suppressed and the moreadvanced technologies that will be introduced by your universal brothers andsisters will clear the pollution and provide renewable energy, new modes oftransportation, new types of building materials, and greatly enhanced foodproduction methods. Your hearts will be gladdened at the amazing speed withwhich these changes will happen!

Naturalbuilding products that will come into wide usage along with plants that will beintroduced include clay, strong reeds, straw, tropical canes and surfacestones, and all will be used in conscious agreement with humankind. While there are countless levels between thelowest and the highest universal intelligence, which you may think of asomniscience, no thing is excluded from the mass consciousness. To be morepersonal—indeed, to be more correct—substitute “soul” for “thing” and you cansee the interrelationship of the totality of this universe. The higher thevibrations of any environment, the higher the levels of comprehension of alllife within it, thus just as you are expanding in consciousness, so are all theelements of Nature in your world growing in their varying levels of awareness.

Thefast-growing food crops, flowers, cotton and other fiber-producing plants,plants with medicinal aspects, canes and grasses, and all kinds of trees willagree to grow as long as needed to meet your requirements and then transmutetheir energy into your usage of them. Although much less lumber will be used thancurrently, the sacred relationship between trees and humankind includes theirwillingness to be used for decorative parts of building interiors and furniturein the short term, perhaps as long as the next half century. Acknowledgement of all these natural sources’importance and consciousness and gratitude for their willingness to give theirlives for your use will become inherent in all peoples. Too, you will come to know and treasure theDevic kingdom that is so closely allied with the beauty and thriving of allthat you consider Nature.

Theallocation of food and other basic life essentials available in the richercountries will be shared on an equitable basis with the poorer countries untila global production order is achieved. Diets will change from meat and seafood to plants as people learn torespect and honor all animal life. The herds of food animals will decreasethrough the cessation of breeding and natural transition, and as plants becomediet staples, any that were harmfully genetically engineered will shed thoseproperties.

Animals inthe wild will instinctively know not to overpopulate and those that are carnivorous will turn to the plant kingdomfor sustenance. The albinos being bornin several animal species have both spiritual and transitionalsignificance. You associate white withpeace, and these rarities that are appearing are symbolic of the coming changesin animal nature that will end the predator-prey food chain and restore thepeaceable relationship that once existed among all species, includinghumankind. The instances of unlikelycross-species friendships and even nurturing of the young from one species bymothers of another are more indications of Earth’s return to her originalparadise self. Still, an extremely importantfactor in this is the inspiration in many souls to be advocates for the animalkingdom and alleviate their manmade plight.

Thecetaceans’ spiritual mission, to embody in huge bulk and inhabit your oceanswhere they absorb and anchor the light beamed to the planet from distantcivilizations, soon will have been fulfilled. These whale and dolphin souls, which species-wide are the most highlyevolved spiritually and intellectually on your planet, will soar to theiroriginal light stations when they leave physically, but they will continue tograce your planet with their love energy.

What arecommonly known as “global warming” and “El Nino” are part of Earth’s naturalprocesses to return to her original moderate climate everywhere. While she is achieving this, glaciers willmelt, the vast deserts will become arable, rain forests will flourish, andvariations in temperatures will markedly decrease—ultimately, everyplace inyour world will be comfortably habitable. Peoples now living in the coldest or the hottest climes will adapt, butit is unavoidable that the few animal species in the polar regions willdisappear and some that live on the fringes will survive by migrating; theaffected species instinctively will know not to reproduce or when to move.

Contrary tocurrent count and certainly population projections, your numbers are decreasingand the birth rate will continue to drop but not precipitously. The balance ofNature no longer will require pestilence, so no disease-causing or transmittingfactors will be present, and the common use of toxic chemicals and prescriptiondrugs will cease. Medical treatmentswill drastically change until there no longer is any need for therapies becausebodies, which will have a greatly longer lifetime, will become free of allforms of dis-ease. New educationalsystems and resource materials will reflect factual universal and planetaryhistory, and true spirituality will replace religions in accordance with thetruths that will be revealed.

Those aresome of the most significant changes underway and ahead, and all will havetrickle-down effects that will permeate and uplift every facet of life onEarth. The Golden Age—the “secondedition” of the Garden of Eden—will radiate the love, harmony, serenity andbeauty of spirit that you, in your remembered awareness of being god andgoddess selves, ARE.

Now I shalltell you some of the more “down-to-Earth” features that you can anticipate inthat beauteous world. City life will bemuch more fulfilling for the spirit than it is today due to the demolishing ofsubstandard buildings and restoration of once fine buildings that fell intodecay; the addition of many small parks and colorful playgrounds, vegetable andflower gardens, and neighborhood libraries, concerts, museums, and gallerieswith locally produced art forms; entertainment and recreational centers for allages and interests; and animals, even those you now consider wild, roamingfreely. Also, new transportation modes and a much fairer distribution of wealthwill enable city dwellers to frequent the countryside, where a booming businesswill be “bed-and-breakfast” inns to accommodate the growing desire for thoseoases of respite from routine activity, and to travel to distant places aswell. Still, millions now living incities may prefer to move to the solitude and restorative energy of familiarrural, forested areas. And, like a newwave of pioneers, some of you will be motivated to relocate to currentlyuninhabitable places when those start flourishing and beckon the adventuresome,while other souls will choose to live in houseboats on the calm, restful seas.

Architecturewill be limited only by imagination and choices, but no building will be uglyor inadequate for its purpose. Geodesicdomes will be popular as will fanciful building designs that reflect thelight-heartedness that so long has been denied the majority of Earth’speoples. Current and new technologieswill produce construction materials similar in strength and appearance totoday’s concrete, steel, rigid and flexible plastics, and those along withnatural products and quality simulations of fine woods will be widelyused. So will glass, which will bealtered from its present composition, because you will desire to live closerwith Nature even when you are indoors.

By unifiedintent, no litter or eyesore of any kind will exist anywhere. Wherever you live or travel, you will notwant the vista marred by the utility poles that now are necessary blights onlandscapes. The poles will be removedand where conduits are required, they will be underground; and other energysources will be direct, without any need for connecting wires. Although telepathy will become a common formof communication, voice-to-voice communion across the miles will be asimportant as now, but the harmful aspects of the wireless methods you are usingwill be gone. Expanses of concrete gradually will be removed too, as newtransportation modes will change the need for current fuels and highways.

All unjustlaws and policies will be struck down and education worldwide will accuratelyreflect the universal truths. Thewriting, printing and distribution of textbooks will be done expeditiously inconjunction with computerized lessons, and the souls who are innately preparedto teach will step up to this mission they had chosen.

These andother marvelous lifestyle differences awaiting you are indeed gargantuanchanges from life in this moment, yet the greatest transformation you willexperience is in humankind, where love and higher consciousness are Recreating“miracles.” Like souls on Earth and in Nirvana once again going back and forth between these physical and spiritworlds, travel that was commonplace until third density limitations closedminds to this possibility. Like yourtranscendence from believing you are lone individuals to knowing yourinseparability from all life in this universe, and embracing each other as wellas members of extraterrestrial civilizations as the brothers and sisters youall are. Now I musttell you as well that the transition from this day to that world will continueto present challenges. To say otherwise would be neither truthful nor prudentas your expectations would not be met, and instead of successfully dealing withchallenges—which you are well prepared to do with wisdom and strength of spiritand character or you wouldn’t have chosen and been selected to participate!—youcould become discouraged as Earth continues apace on her ascension journey.

Wars andother violence, injustices, deception and corruption will continue until thatenergy set in motion is played out. Although the dark forces, the vast force field of negative thoughtforms, has left this part of the galaxy, tentacles of that energetic influenceremain and are making last ditch efforts to control the most vulnerable soulsas well as attack those with the brightest light. Further, the higher frequencies now on theplanet are magnifying all human characteristics, and those that aredarkly-inclined are showing that intensification through increasing hostility,greed, violence and apathy toward those who are suffering and in desperateneed. So, while not all of the darkskirmishes are past, we urge you to be encouraged by each that arises—it meansthat the vanquishing of the darkness is that much nearer. Rejoice in knowing that its momentum is closeto the point of exhaustion because all of you who are living your light arehelping to speed it to conclusion.

Controllingthe flow of money is the last mundane tool the dark ones have and they willkeep it within their grasp as long as they can. The “rotten tap root,” so tosay, has been loosened and the tendrils are breaking, but until all have beeneliminated, economic difficulties will affect many lives. Remember, you have the power to create yourown abundance through the law of attraction, and sharing your resources is thebest way to bring even more abundance into your life.

Prior topeace and harmony prevailing throughout Earth, many, many souls will leave dueto the same causes as now—disease, starvation, injuries in wars and other typesof violence, geophysical events—so the population will continue to decreasefrom those means. As sorrowful as thesedeaths may seem, the adversity that the souls experience beyond their pre-birthagreements gives them leaps forward in soul growth. They will greet theirreturn to Nirvana knowing that if they choose another Earth lifetime, it willbe in the splendor and glory of a revitalized world and the abiding love amongits inhabitants.

Geophysicalevents will continue as Earth’s natural and necessary cleansing process. Theblatant disregard for human and animal life for millennia past—and stillhappening on a lamentable scale—caused a massive amount of negativity toaccumulate. Although this has been greatly reduced via geophysical events, itsremnants, plus what is being generated anew, must be released. It matters notwhether this is by natural or manmade occurrences—the ridding of thatnegativity is what is important. The effects of these events, which will lessenin frequency and severity as Earth keeps ascending, are being diminished to thegreatest extent possible by members of your universal family. Their technologycannot prevent all deaths and damage, but it is limiting the death toll andproperty destruction by leveling out over a wide area the energy releases viaearthquakes and volcanic eruptions and is steering the strongest storms to lesspopulated areas.

The recordhigh and low temperatures, droughts and flooding that are part of Earth’stransition to her original moderate climate globally will present hardships fora while longer. Gradually some sea levelcoastlines will become submerged; this need not present anxiety as there will beprotective and compensatory measures for any inhabitants of those areas. We areaware of the speculation that Atlantis and Lemuria may rise, but this will nothappen. Those large land masses served their civilizations during that era onEarth, but their return is not needed; however, some souls living then havecome back to assist in the ongoing consciousness-raising and spiritual renewalwithin today’s populace.

Thatreligions are teaching the “word of God” will be shown in the fullness of thedeception that spawned that falsehood, and among the challenges you willencounter are the many individuals who will not believe the truths that will berevealed. Some will do battle, convincedthat it is their divine right and duty to defeat the Anti-Christ or theinfidels through bloodshed. You will witness the shock, confusion, anger,disillusionment, and yes, very likely fear—the deceivers who made a vengefulGod have been masterful for eons—of people whose minds are not totally closedto the revelations. Biggest solar storm in years bombards Earth

The largestsolar radiation outburst in six years is on its way to Earth and will hit ourplanet with high-energy atomic particles at around 2 pm GMT, scientists say,causing possible malfunction of communication satellites and power grids.

The majorimpact will occur in the North Pole area: routes of some near North Poleflights have been changed.

Thefunctioning of the ISS will not be affected. Taking into consideration theprognosis for the solar storm, the ISS crew will not even have to takeadditional radiation security measures.

Massiveejections of plasma, or coronal mass, from the Sun have often resulted incommunication and other satellites, as well as ground communications facilitiesfailing. They can cause magnetic storms but bring no evident harm to the healthof the planet’s population.

The firstsolar storm this year was registered on January 19 by NASA’sextra-magnetospheric satellites at the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory SOHO,Solar Terrestrial Relations Observatory STEREO, and Advanced CompositionExplorer ACE. Occurring after two storm-free months, that storm was ranked arelatively weak grade 5.

The solartempest heading towards us now is very different. The last time a storm of suchforce happened was five years ago, in May 2005.

“For 24-25January, we expect a magnetic storm that with a high probability can beattributed to a powerful class,” says the head of Russia’s Institute ofTerrestrial Magnetism, Ionosphere and Radio Wave Propagation Sergey Gaydash.

Gaydashsays the new solar outburst was accompanied by a so-called ‘protonic event’ – asharp increase in a high-energy proton stream with speeds of up to 4 millionkilometers per hour. Dangerous levels of 10-50 MeV (megaelectronvolt) protonshave already been exceeded, while the levels of 100 MeV protons – the mostdangerous for satellites and electronic equipment – has not passed the criticalthreshold so far.

“…. Many things are happening with the planet at the moment. The magnetics are changing as well. The magnetics of the solar system and the sun in particular, have an influence on your weather. First patients shown to improve with embryonic stem cells

(Reuters) -Before treatment, the 51-year-old graphic artist was legally blind, unable toread a single letter on a standard eye chart. She has suffered from Stargardt'sdisease, the most common form of macular degeneration in young patients, sinceshe was a teenager, and it was getting progressively worse.

A secondpatient, aged 78, suffered from dry macular degeneration - the leading cause ofblindness in the elderly -and could not even see well enough to go shopping.

But afterbeing treated with stem cells from a donated human embryo, both women haveimproved dramatically, researchers said on Monday. Stem cells are master cellsthat can differentiate into any of the 200 kinds of cells in the human body.

Theirresults are the first-ever report of the medical use of stem cells taken fromhuman embryos, making them crucial barometers of whether the controversialtechnique will ever find widespread therapeutic uses.

In a paperpublished online in The Lancet on Monday, physicians at the University of California,Los Angeles, and scientists at biotechnology company Advanced Cell Technologyreport that the first two patients in the clinical trial suffered no adversehealth effects from the treatment and seem to have benefited from it.

A weekafter having cells derived from a days-old embryo injected into her eye, thegraphic artist could count fingers, and after one month she could read the topfive letters on the eye chart. She can see more color and contrast, has startedusing her computer, and for the first time in years can read her watch andthread a needle. The macular degeneration patient recently went to the mall forthe first time in years.

The safetyfindings, not any vision improvement, is what people should focus on, saidDusko Ilic, senior lecturer in stem cell science at Kings College London, whowas not involved in the work.

"Ifeveryone expects that the blind patients will see after being treated ... itwill end up as disaster," he said.

Nevertheless,advocates for the blind are already hailing the results. "At last we areseeing fruits of human embryonic stem cell research entering clinicaltrials," said Peter Coffey, Director of the London Project to CureBlindness.

OBJECTIONSAND RISKS

Using humanembryonic stem cells for research or treatment has incited controversy forethical and medical reasons. Some opponents argue that because removing stemcells from days-old human embryos almost always destroys the embryo, thetechnique amounts to murder.

ACT is theonly company currently testing human embryonic stem cells in study patients.Last November, stem-cell pioneer Geron announced that it was halting what hadbeen the first-ever clinical trial of the cells-testing them in patients with spinalcord injuries-and leaving the field.

When RobertLanza, chief scientific officer of ACT, approached ophthalmic surgeon StevenSchwartz of UCLA about leading the clinical trial, Schwartz asked for ethicaladvice from two of his patients: elderly nuns. They gave him the go-ahead, hesaid last year.

Evenscientists who support stem cell research argue that they could be dangerous touse therapeutically. The very property that makes them so valuable in research- stem cells can morph into any of the kinds of cells in the human body - alsomakes them risky.

They canform teratomas, a type of tumor that arises when stem cells differentiate intoa profusion of cell types.

Anotherconcern is that transplanting cells derived from human embryos could be rejectedby the patient's immune system. The ACT team got around that by targeting theeye, which is an "immunoprivileged" site that does not produce astrong immune response to foreign tissue.

In thestudy, physicians led by Schwartz injected what are called retinal epithelialcells into one eye of each patient. RPE cells lie at the back of the eye andbathe the retina's rods and cones in substances called growth factors. When RPEcells die, as they do in macular degeneration, so do the photoreceptors, eventuallycausing blindness.

TransplantingRPE cells grown from stem cells, Lanza reasoned when he began this researchalmost a decade ago, might rejuvenate the eye's rods and cones, restoring lostvision.

To produceRPE cells, Lanza and his colleagues arranged to obtain days-old embryos createdby in vitro fertilization. The parents, who no longer wanted the embryos,donated them for research. The scientists then removed a single stem cell fromone embryo, grew it in the lab to obtain millions of cells, and differentiatedthem into RPE cells.

The primarypurpose of the clinical trial was to determine whether the implanted cellscaused any harm. So far, neither patient has experienced inflammation, anindication that their immune system is not attacking the foreign cells.

And thereis no evidence that a teratoma formed in either patient. Researchers also foundthat the RPE cells still survive after being implanted four months ago.

NOT A CUREFOR THE BLIND

The goal ofthe study was to determine safety and, at most, see whether the therapy canslow down or arrest vision loss, not restore it. "The fact that we'reseeing measurable improvements in their vision, persisting for more than fourmonths, is a bonus," Lanza said in an interview.

Althoughrods and cones cannot be brought back from the dead, he explains, "untilyou lose them completely you can rescue them." He believes that thetransplanted RPE cells both bathed the deteriorating rods and cones innourishing growth factors and gobbled up fragments of dead rods and cones,keeping the retinal environment healthier for the survivors.

The UCLAphysicians plan to enroll a total of 12 Stargardt's patients and 12 maculardegeneration patients in the ongoing clinical trial, with groups of threepatients each receiving a different number of retinal epithelial cells.

The twopatients being reported on Monday each received the smallest dose, 50,000cells. Other patients will receive at least twice that many. The trial is alsoexpanding across the Atlantic: the first patient was treated at Moorfields EyeHospital in London last Friday. In a later trial, they hope to treat patientswith earlier-stage disease, before so much of their vision has been lost.

DavidPrentice of the Family Research Council, a pro-life group that has opposed theuse of human embryos for research, says the results will require more scrutiny.

"Youhave to follow the patients longer to know if it's safe," he told Reuters."People will also want to know if there are other routes to the sameend," using sources of stem cells other than human embryos.

Lanza isplanning just that. He believes that skin cells "re-programmed" torevert to embryonic status might prove just as good a source or RPE and otherspecialized cells as human embryonic stem cells. Called IPS (for "inducedpluripotent stem") cells, they can be derived from a patient's own skincells and pose no risk of immune rejection.

"Ithink we can be up and running in the clinic with IPS cells in one or twoyears," Lanza says.

Astronomershave spotted a "dwarf" galaxy some 10 billion light-years away whichmay be made mostly of the mysterious material called dark matter.

The dwarfwas found using a technique called gravitational lensing. It is only the seconddark dwarf ever seen, and it is by far the most distant.

The factthat so few dwarf galaxies are seen in our own cosmic neighbourhood hasremained a conundrum in astronomy.

The study inNature could explain it: they may be overwhelmingly dark matter.

Dwarfgalaxies often occur in the periphery of larger galaxies, where they are knownas satellites - the Milky Way may have many as well.

"Accordingto the theory of galaxy formation, you'd expect thousands of thesesatellites," explained lead author of the study Simona Vegetti of theMassachusetts Institute of Technology.

"Butif you look at the Milky Way we only find 30, so it's important to understandhow many satellites are really there, and important to look at other galaxiesother than the Milky Way," she told BBC News.

That willhelp determine if our cosmic neighbourhood of galaxies - the Local Group - isunusual, or if the theory of galaxy formation is incomplete.

Massivequestion

Dark matteris so named because it does not interact with light - it cannot be seendirectly, as the stars and dust of the cosmos can.

However, itdoes have mass - making up 85% of the mass in the Universe - and the effects ofthat mass can be spotted.

Gravitationallensing is a technique in which an object that lies between Earth and a distantlight source can actually act as a "lens"; the object's mass bendsthe distant galaxy's light, magnifying and distorting it.

By usingcomputer models of how that magnification and distortion should work, the massof the lensing galaxy - and where that mass is distributed - can be determined.

Dark energy and dark matter mysteries

them together

Thetechnique was recently used to develop the widest view of dark matter distribution in the Universe ever produced.

Dr Vegettiand colleagues in the US and the Netherlands have now used the Keck telescopein Hawaii to study the lensing caused by a distant elliptical galaxy calledJVAS B1938+666.

They founda discrepancy in comparing with the image that their detailed computer modelsuggested should come from the system.

Somethingwith a mass about 200,000,000 times that of our Sun is in the periphery of theimage they see.

Yet thatsource of mass is not visible in the image of the galaxy itself.

"It'svery hard to tell at the moment because the telescopes are just not powerfulenough to see such dim galaxies so far away," Dr Vegetti said.

"But[the dwarf galaxy] is most likely dominated by dark matter, or maybe there area few stars hiding here and there."

The team mustcontinue the hunt for such satellites to get to the bottom of the dark mystery.

"Wewere kind of lucky that the first one we looked at also had a satellite,"Dr Vegetti said.

"If wefind other galaxies or satellites, it will tell us whether we need to changethe properties of dark matter; if we don't find enough, then dark matter mustbe different from what we think."

Dutch insurers pay for Christian anti-gay therapy

Dutchnational daily Trouw reports that a therapy intended to cure gay Christians whoconsider their sexual preference to be sinful is fully paid for by healthinsurance companies.

Healthinsurance companies are obligated to pay for the therapy because theorganisation providing it, Different, is an officially recognised institutionfor mental health care.

Medicalorganisations argue that the therapy is inherently flawed and potentiallyharmful. A spokesperson for Doctors organisation KNMG says: “As a general rule,a doctor is not allowed to offer a therapy that does not work. There is noscientific evidence that a therapy intended to suppress a person’s homosexualfeelings would be effective.” He added that such a therapy could even beharmful.

Psychologistsworking for Different say in Trouw that homosexuality is not an integral partof a person’s psychological make-up but rather an ‘orientation’ that can betreated. The organisation claims a 30-percent success rate. Homosexuality isseen as the result of psychological traumas incurred during childhood such as alack of clear role models and child sex abuse.

Healthinsurance companies are much embarrassed by the therapy. A spokesperson for theAchmea company says it rejects the therapy but is legally obligated to pay thebills submitted by these clients.

NASA Produces and Promotes New LENR Video: Nuclear Power Coming Soon To Your Home

NASA hasproduced and featured a video presenting LENR as a technology. The video features Dr. Joseph Zawodny, SeniorResearch Scientist at NASA Langley Research Center. The video highlights the potential of havinga LENR nuclear power generation device in your home to provide all the powerneeds of your home as the “easiest” implementation, even though it couldpotentially be used even for transportation and infrastructure. The technology is “clean” producing noionizing radiation or waste.

Colourful religions in the Netherlands

Colourfulceremonies of Shamans, Druids, Hindus, Muslims, Buddhists, Christians andothers are the subject matter of a new book entitled Religie Nu (Religion Now)by Dutch photographer Eddy Seesing. He spent seven years recording no less than71 religious communities in the Netherlands.

He got theidea while on a photo expedition to the town of Gouda, taking pictures ofseveral generations of Moroccan-Dutch citizens. He says it made him realise how their lives are interwoven withreligion: "They have their hair cut in the mosque, they shop in themosque, their children go to religion classes in the mosque."

Anotherinspiration for Seesing was his mother, who belonged to a Roman Catholicparish. The photographer said, "After my father's death she joined thechoir, participated in activities of the Senior Citizens' Union and worked as avolunteer. The parish gave her a happy old age."

Shamanism

EddySeesing himself broke with the Catholic church because he disagreed with itsviews on women, gays and birth control. On his journeys he got in touch withBuddhism and later with Shamanism, a natural religion which became his own. Histwin children were recently accepted into the religion with a welcomingceremony. Seesing first came across Shamanism in Canada, where he spent twoweeks with a shaman. He particularly praises his extraordinary experiencesduring the sweat lodge ceremony: "In the heat you experience a particularspirituality."

Seesinghopes his book will make it clear how many similarities there are in many ofthe sermons, and in baptising and sacrificing ceremonies. But, he says,"I'm also making an effort to show the cultural differences. We shouldstop trying to convert each other and be glad about the variety."

Anexhibition of the photographs published in Religie Nu/Religion Now is beingheld in the Rotterdam Kunsthal until 12 February 2012. The book, which has textin both Dutch and English, is published by Thoth in Bussum.

Who has ahotline to heaven? A controversy over competing claims to that honour isheating up in the Netherlands.

The storybegan last spring, when a statue of an angel holding a mobile phone wasunveiled at St John’s Cathedral in the southern Dutch city of 's-Hertogenbosch.

The angelwas one of 25 new statues revealed to mark the completion of a lengthyrestoration of the cathedral. "The angel's phone has just onebutton," the sculptor told journalists. "It directly dials God."

Withinweeks an enterprising local woman had opened a mobile telephone number andTwitter account, called 'ut Engelke' or 'the little angel'. She says shereceives 30 calls per day on average, many of them from people who just want totalk about their problems. And some from schoolchildren who need help withtheir homework. All calls are free, so her callers pay only the regular ratesfor ringing a mobile telephone.

Not to beoutdone, the St John's church adminstration has now established its own hotlineto God, a toll number that costs callers 80 cents per minute. Callers hear arecorded message explaining that all proceeds go to the upkeep of thecathedral.

The ownerof 'ut Engelke' says she's received dozens of calls from people who are angryat the church for stealing the idea. "Success has manyfathers," she told ANP news agency.

Possiblythe most famous physicist since Albert Einstein, Stephen Hawking, has turned70. Bound to a wheelchair by an incurable motor neurone disease, he is regardedby many as the greatest genius of our day.

RetiredCambridge Professor Stephen Hawking has lived his life defying expectations.Diagnosed with motor neurone disease in 1963 he was given two years to live.Now almost 50 years on the physicist is celebrating his 70th birthday.

At the ageof 20, the Cambridge student had justembarked on his doctoral studies when he was diagnosed with a fatal andextremely rare disease known as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).

The diseasesoon confined Hawking to a wheelchair. He lost the use of his voice and becamereliant on a machine to speak. But with two marriages, three children and ameteoric academic career, few can argue that the physicist has led an activelife both privately and professionally.

The scientisthas often confessed that although gifted as a student he was lazy. It wasn'tuntil his diagnosis that he began to concentrate on his studies. His work paidoff and in 1979 he was appointed Lucasian Professor at Cambridge University - achair once held by Sir Isaac Newton.

It waswhile working at Cambridge that Hawking developed some of his most importantcontributions to physics.

Groundbreakingdiscoveries

UsingAlbert Einstein's theory of general relativity, he proved that the Big Bangmust been triggered some 14 billion years ago with a so-called"singularity"- an unimaginable tiny dot that the current formulas andlaws still do not grasp.

His mostbeloved area of focus, however, proved to be black holes - the galacticmonsters whose gravity devours anything that gets close to them. In one of hismost important discoveries, he found that back holes do not have an infinitelife span. In a theory now known as "Hawking radiation," he foundthat black holes emit radiation causing them to evaporate slowly.

Hawking revolutionized our understanding
of black holes and the Big Bang

Without anydefinitive proof of his theory, however, Hawking has not been awarded the NobelPrize for Physics. "One could measure the outgoing radiation from blackholes, but unfortunately, there seem to be none in our area," he said.

In spite ofa lack of conclusive evidence, most experts are convinced of the existence ofHawking radiation.

It was"a discovery which will still be relevant in hundreds of years," saidBruce Allen, director of the Max Planck Institute for Gravitational Physics inHanover and one of Hawking's former students. "There are few discoveriesquite like this."

But isHawking really - as many people have suggested - a second Albert Einstein? Notaccording to some of his academic colleagues.

"Hawking'scontributions are certainly not as significant as those of Einstein," saidKlaus Fredenhagen a physics professor from the University of Hamburg."With the theory of relativity, Einstein discovered something completelynew, which was previously unknown."

Hawking isindeed known best for working within the context of existing theories andmaking important advances therein.

Fundamentalphysics made easy

Above all,Hawking stands out for his success in making cosmology palatable to a wideaudience.

In 2007 Hawking abandoned his wheelchair
for the first time in 40 years

In 1988 hepublished his book "A Brief History of Time." It soon became the mostsuccessful popular-science work of all time. Although the material is far fromsimple, the book sold millions of copies worldwide.

Already anestablished figure in the field of science, he went on to co-author a series ofchildren's of books with his daughter Lucy.

The Britonalso knows how to market himself. Among a number of fictional cameos, he hasfeatured in the science-fiction series "Star Trek" where he won agame of poker against Einstein and Newton.

In April2007 he also fulfilled a life-long wish to experience a state of absoluteweightlessness. Pictures of the genius during a NASA zero-gravity flight spreadaround the world. Once the space simulator had landed Hawking declared,"Space - here I come."

Defyingdisease

That heembarked on such an excursion at a late stage in life is nothing short of amedical miracle. "I've known him since 1980," Allen said. "Inever thought that Stephen would live quite as long."

As ascientist, Hawking's colleagues have described him as extremely"intense." From a young age he was unable to scribble his formulas onpaper or on boards, as many other physicists are known to do. Instead, in ashow of his extreme capacity for concentration, he performed the highly complexcalculations in his head.

"He isextremely friendly and approachable, even though he is so famous," saidFay Dowker, one of Hawking's former doctoral students and now a physicist atImperial College London.

Rememberinghow she once went into the Institute with a newly shaven head she recalled"Hawking just grinned at me and asked 'Fay, why did you pick a fight witha lawnmower?'"

Over thelast few months, coverage of protests by ultra-Orthodox Jews and fundamentalistCatholics has managed to knock news about Muslim extremists off the front pagesof many newspapers.

Theirprotests against 'indecent clothing' and 'blasphemous' art have sparkeddemonstrations and counter demonstrations. The key to understanding the clashesis fear.

Gendersegregation and blasphemy

In Israel,clashes between ultra-Orthodox Jews - Haredi - and liberal and secular Jewshave been escalating for some time but recently two stories made headlinesaround the world. Haredi men frequently try to force women to ride at the backof buses passing through ultra-Orthodox neighbourhoods of Jerusalem; however,in December, one woman refused and the confrontation made the headlines andprompted an ministerial conference on gender exclusion.

Thatincident was followed by a far more serious one: an eight-year-old girl fromBeit Shemesh (a town near Jerusalem) told her mother she was afraid to walk toschool because she was being verbally abused and spat upon by ultra-Orthodoxmen. They claimed the child was indecently dressed. A wave of protests andcounter protests erupted after the story was aired on the evening news.

In France,fundamentalist Catholics waged a sometimes violent campaign against theatreproductions they consider blasphemous and Catholic extremists destroyed anartwork in Paris.

Threatened

Fundamentalistsfrom various religious faiths have made their views and beliefs more vehementlyknown since the early 1990s says theology sociologist Sipko Vellenga. Accordingto the University of Amsterdam professor, fundamentalist believers feelthreatened, even in countries that protect religious freedoms:

"It isvery evident in the number of European countries, even here in the Netherlands.You see it in the discussions about freedom in educational institutions,tolerance and intolerance toward civil servants who refuse to perform same-sexmarriages and the ban on blasphemy. Here in the Netherlands, the bill proposinga ban on ritual slaughter created a huge debate. The discussions also made somemembers of orthodox groups to feel threatened; many felt as though the freedomthat they had previously enjoyed was being taken away."

Thesometimes violent protests and by fundamentalists and ultra-orthodox in Franceand Israel generated huge counter protests. Israel's Chief Rabbi and Frenchbishops denounced the violence in no uncertain terms and also called on allsides to respect freedom of religion.

UltraorthodoxMuslims in Europe feel that the increasing pressure to adapt to a westernsecular society is a way of restricting their religious freedom.

In Israel,ultra-Orthodox Jews wield considerable political power and appear to be testingthe limits of that power; however, verbally abusing an eight-year-old girl wasa step too far and it resulted in huge protests - by liberal, orthodox andsecular Jews against the ultra-Orthodox.

The world of theultra-orthodox, who want to devote their lives to the study of the Torah andTalmud, clashes with the world of liberal and secular Jews, who see nothingwrong with shops opening or buses running on the Sabbath.

"Thegenie has to be shoved back into the bottle. But it will be very difficult; itwould be incredibly offensive to the ultra-Orthodox if the Jerusalemauthorities suddenly decided to allow public transport to run on Saturdays orto allow shops and cafes to open up. One also has to respect their beliefs buton the other hand, they also have to respect the fundamental laws of theland."

Tensions

In order tokeep the peace, tolerance has to come from both sides. But the fundamentalistreligious groups aren't the only ones who feel threatened: liberals andatheists feel threatened by the increasingly vocal and politically powerfulreligious right. Despite that, the influence of fundamentalist groups in Europeis rather over estimated.

After thegreat changes of the 1960s, the dominant view was that society was secular andthe importance and influence religion would gradually diminish and disappear.Those (few) who wished to hold on to a religious belief would have to adapt.Professor Vellenga says reality is a little different:

"Thedominant view now is that religion is a political and social force andultra-orthodox believers do not adapt to the secular state. And if they aregiven the chance, they will attempt to turn back the clock and get rid ofsecularism. People are beginning to believe that they have to fight to protectthe secular state. This is creating tensions between the various groups."

New debate

Thetensions have not been solved. Vellenga has called for it a fresh debate on theposition and space for religious minorities and a re-evaluation of theachievements of the secular state. "That will demand concessionsfrom both sides," says Vellenga.

The debatehas already started in Europe but representatives from all the groups have tojoin in and participate. What are people afraid of, what drives them? Vellengaadds, "an open and honest conversation can sometimes work wonders."

ThePentagon's premiere research agency has chosen a former astronaut to lead afoundation that is designed to take humanity to the stars.

The DefenseAdvanced Research Projects Agency (Darpa) and Nasa are sponsoring the project,known as the 100-Year Starship.

MaeJemison, the first African-American woman to go into space, was notified lastweek that she had won, according to a copy of a Darpa letter obtained by theBBC.

Sinceleaving Nasa, Jemison has been involved in science education programmes, and isknown as a space travel enthusiast and long-time Star Trek fan.

Herorganisation, the Dorothy Jemison Foundation for Excellence, is partnered onthe Darpa project with Icarus Interstellar, a non-profit organisation that isdedicated to interstellar travel, and the Foundation for EnterpriseDevelopment.

Since itwas first announced last year, the 100-Year Starship project has been met withtrepidation by some, and excitement by many.

With Nasascaling back its manned space programmes, the idea of a manned trip to thestars, which is well beyond any current technology, may sound audacious.

But thegoal is not to have the government fund the actual building of spacecraft destinedfor the stars, but rather to create a foundation that can last 100 years inorder to help foster the research needed for interstellar travel.

The moneyfor the winning team, $500,000, is small, but is designed to help jumpstart theeffort. According to a copy of the notification letter, Jemison's proposal wastitled: "An Inclusive Audacious Journey Transforms Life Here on Earth& Beyond".

A spokesmanfor Darpa declined to comment on the award, which has not been publiclyannounced.

A Catholicbishop who fathered two children has stepped down.

PopeBenedict has accepted the resignation of Gabino Zavala, an auxilliary bishop ofLos Angeles, the Vatican said.

TheArchbishop of Los Angeles, Jose Gomez, wrote in a letter to worshippers thatBishop Zavala told him in December that he was the father of two minor teenagechildren.

Thechildren live with their mother in another state.

ArchbishopGomez said that the archdiocese was offering the family "spiritualcare," as well as funding to help the children with college costs.

In hisletter he described the news as "sad and difficult" and said BishopZavala had been living privately and not participating in ministry sinceresigning.

BishopZavala is 60 and was born in Mexico. He has campaigned against the deathpenalty and for immigrants' rights.

The Vaticandid not spell out the reason for Bishop Zavala's resignation in its statement,but made reference to canon law which allows bishops to step down before normalretirement age if they are ill or unfit for office for some other reason.

The Popehas shown no sign of relaxing the Roman Catholic Church's rule on priestlycelibacy, which has been in place since the 11th Century.

In March2010 he described celibacy as "the sign of full devotion, the entirecommitment to the Lord and to the 'Lord's business', an expression of givingoneself to God and to others".

Priests arenot allowed to marry but married Anglican priests who convert to Catholicismare exempted from the celibacy rule.

Two daysago Pope Benedict appointed an American married priest to head the first USstructure for Anglicans converting to Roman Catholicism.

Doomed teen Ben Breedlove shares life after death experiences on YouTube

CHICAGO — Aweek before Ben Breedlove died of a heart attack, the Texas teenager posted aremarkable video describing the peace and bright lights he’d found the othertimes his heart stopped.

Breedlove,18, tells his story with simple note cards and the occasional smile, sittingclose to the camera and stepping back just once to show the scar from when apacemaker was implanted to help his troubled heart.

It is aremarkably hopeful video, though Breedlove also describes the fear he livedwith after being born with a serious heart condition and disappointment that hecould not play sports and “be the same as everyone else.”

“The firsttime I cheated death was when I was 4,” one of the cards said.

Breedlovehad a seizure and as nurses rushed him down a hospital hallway, he told hismother of the bright light overhead.

She saidshe couldn’t see anything, but he felt his fear and worries washed away andcouldn’t help smiling.

“I can’teven describe the peace, how peaceful it was,” he wrote. “I will NEVER forgetthat feeling or that day.”

Breedlovenearly died again a few months ago when his heart stopped during a routinesurgery to remove his tonsils.

“It was amiracle that they brought me back,” he wrote. “I was scared to die but am SOglad I didn’t.”

Breedlove’sheart stopped again on December 6. He was at his Austin high school and satdown on a bench after feeling like he was going to faint.

He passedout and when he woke up, he couldn’t talk or move. He could only watch andlisten as paramedics put shock pads on his chest.

He heardthem say that his heart had stopped and that he had no pulse, which he explainsby the fact that “when people’s bodies ‘die’ the brain still works for a shorttime.”

“I reallythought to myself, this is it, I’m dying,” he wrote.

“The nextthing that happened I’m not sure if it was a dream or vision. But while I wasstill unconscious I was in this white room. No walls, it just went on and on…”

He foundhimself standing with his favorite rapper, Kid Cudi, and they were both dressedin really nice suits.

“Why he wasthe only one there with me, I’m still trying to figure out,” Breedlove wrote.

“I had thatsame feeling, I couldn’t stop smiling. I then looked at myself in the mirrorand I was proud of MYSELF. Of my entire life, everything I have done. IT WASTHE BEST feeling.”

Kid Cudiput his hand on his shoulder and then Breedlove’s favorite song came on, thepart where Cudi raps “when will this fantasy end… when will the heaven begin?”

Cudi toldhim “Go now” and Breedlove woke up.

Afterviewing the video, the rapper said he broke down in tears watching it.

“This hasreally touched my heart in a way I cant describe, this is why I do what I do.Why I write my life, and why I love you all so much,” Kid Cudi wrote on hisblog.

“I know Benis at Peace, and I hope he gets a chance to sit and talk with my Dad.”

Breedloveended his video with four final cards: “I didn’t want to leave that place. Iwish I NEVER woke up. Do you believe in angels or God? I Do.”

Breedlovedied at Christmas and his family said in his death notice that it was a giftfrom God.

“We knowthe Lord used the amazing life of our precious son to reach a weary world onChristmas night, just as He did over 2000 years ago with his own Son,” theywrote, and urged people to find the video that Breedlove posted on YouTube onDecember 18.

George Michael has revealed how close he came to dying from pneumonia, describing hisrecent battle against the illness as "touch and go" and "by farthe worst month of my life".

The singer,who was treated at an Austrian hospital after falling ill while on tour lastmonth, said he felt "very weak but amazing" after returning to theUK.

Speaking toreporters at a hastily convened press conference outside his north London home,a thin, emotional and frail-looking Michael said he was not supposed to speakfor long as he was recovering from a tracheotomy.

He said:"It was by far the worst month of my life, but I am incredibly, incrediblyfortunate to be here – and to have picked up the bug where I did."

Fightingback tears, the singer said he had "woken up" in the hospital 10 daysago and had played down the gravity of his illness to avoid alarming his fans."I got streptococca-something … It's a form of pneumonia and they spentthree weeks keeping me alive basically," he said.

The48-year-old former Wham! singer thanked all those who had sent messages andsupport – and paid tribute to the medical staff who cared for him. He said hehad spent the 10 days since he woke up thanking those who kept him alive.

The singersaid his family, fans and "the fact that I still have plenty to livefor" had helped him pull through the illness. He added: "I have anamazing, amazing life and if I wasn't spiritual enough before the last four orfive weeks then I certainly am now."

He alsosaid he would make up the cancelled dates of his Symphonica tour. "Theplan is to play to every single person who had a ticket," he said."And I would like to play one show for the doctors in the hospital inAustria who saved my life."

Michaelposed for photographers in front of a Christmas tree on a green across the roadfrom his house. Asked if he would pose without his dark glasses, he smiled andsaid: "No, I'm sorry."

Before heappeared, an assistant had brought out a plate of mince pies for the waitingreporters and photographers. Michael wished them all a happy Christmas andsaid: "I hope you enjoyed your mince pies."

Last month,doctors at the AKH hospital in Vienna said Michael had been in intensive carebecause of the severity of the illness and made clear he would need a completerest to recover. But they emphasised he had no further underlying healthproblems.

In astatement, professors Gottfried Locker and Christoph Zielinski said: "Thelatest development in Mr Michael's case, which has evolved from a severepneumococcal infection, necessitated intensive care due to its severity andextension. We are happy to announce that Mr Michael is improving steadily withan impressive regression of pneumonic symptoms, and follows a steady rate ofimprovement as hoped.

"Thereare no other health issues with regards to the patient other than theunderlying pneumonic disorder, and no further measures had to be taken."

IndigenousMaya communities in southern Mexico have begun a year-long countdown to 21December 2012, which will mark the end of a five-millenia cycle in the ancientMayan calendar.

Some peoplehave interpreted the prophesy as predicting the apocalypse.

But expertssay it signifies the end of an era, not the end of the world.

Mayapriests have been holding special religious ceremonies, and Mexican tourismofficials are preparing for a surge in visitors to the region.

Mexico'stourism agency says it hopes to draw around 52 million visitors in 2012, withmany heading to the Maya heartland in the southern states of Chiapas, Yucatan,Quintana Roo and Tabasco.

Powerfulgod

The Mayancivilisation, which reached its peak between 250 and 900AD, was fascinated byastronomy, mathematics and the cycles of time.

Its LongCount calendar began in 3114BC and moves forward in 394-year periods known asBaktuns.

The wintersolstice in 2012 marks the end of the 13th Baktun, a date of specialsignificance that reflects celestial alignments recognised by modernastronomers.

The ideathat it could mean the end of the world - based on a Mayan text carved into astone 1,300 years ago - has been spread on thousands of websites.

Butarchaeologists and Maya experts say the prophesy predicts the return to Earthof a powerful god and the start of a new era, not a global catastrophe.

They pointout that other Maya prophesies refer to events far in the future.

This hasnot stopped the spread of millennial fears around the world.

Tourismofficials are hoping that some of those who believe the end of the world isnigh will take the opportunity to visit the Maya region before it is too late.

Italiangovernment scientists have claimed to have discovered evidence that asupernatural event formed the image on the Turin Shroud, believed by many to bethe burial cloth of Jesus Christ.

After yearsof work trying to replicate the colouring on the shroud, a similar image hasbeen created by the scientists.

However,they only managed the effect by scorching equivalent linen material withhigh-intensity ultra violet lasers, undermining the arguments of otherresearch, they say, which claims the Turin Shroud is a medieval hoax.

Suchtechnology, say researchers from the National Agency for New Technologies,Energy and Sustainable Economic Development (Enea), was far beyond thecapability of medieval forgers, whom most experts have credited with making thefamous relic.

"Theresults show that a short and intense burst of UV directional radiation cancolour a linen cloth so as to reproduce many of the peculiar characteristics ofthe body image on the Shroud of Turin," they said.

And in casethere was any doubt about the preternatural degree of energy needed to makesuch distinct marks, the Enea report spells it out: "This degree of powercannot be reproduced by any normal UV source built to date."

A statementby lead researcher, Dr Paolo Di Lazzaro, said: "If our results prompt aphilosophical or theological debate, these conclusions we'll leave to theexperts; to each person's own conscience," he said.

LuigiGarlaschelli, a professor of chemistry at Pavia University, told TheIndependent: "The implications are... that the image was formed by a burstof UV energy so intense it could only have been supernatural. But I don't thinkthey've done anything of the sort."

RECREATING THE BIG BANG:

- Testshave involved pumping a single bunch of energy particles from the project'saccelerator into the 27-km (17-mile) beam pipe of the collider and steeringthem counter- clockwise around it for about 3 km (2 miles).

- Thecollider aims to simulate conditions milliseconds after the "BigBang" which created the universe around 13.7 billion years ago.

- Thecollisions, in which both particle clusters travel around the speed of light,are monitored on computers at CERN and laboratories around the world byscientists looking for, among other things, a particle that made life possible.

HIGGSBOSON:

- Theelusive particle, which has been called the "Higgs boson" afterBritish physicist Peter Higgs, 82, a particle-physics theorist who first showedin 1964 that it must exist, is thought to be the mysterious factor that giveseverything mass.

WHAT ISTHE BIG BANG?

-Recreating a "Big Bang," which most scientists believe is the onlyexplanation of an expanding universe, ought to show how stars and planets cametogether out of the primeval chaos that followed, the CERN team believes.

- Itsessential feature is the emergence of the universe from a tiny speck about thesize of a coin but in a state of extremely high temperature and density.

- The name"Big Bang" was coined in 1949 by British scientist Fred Hoyle todisparage a then emerging theory about origins that countered his own"steady state" view: that the universe had always existed and wasevolving but not expanding.

- Accordingto the Big Bang model, the universe expanded rapidly from a highly compressedprimordial state, which resulted in a significant decrease in density andtemperature. Soon afterward, the dominance of matter over antimatter (asobserved today) may have been established by processes that also predict protondecay. During this stage many types of elementary particles may have beenpresent. After a few seconds, the universe cooled enough to allow the formationof certain nuclei.

- Thetheory predicts that definite amounts of hydrogen, helium and lithium wereproduced. Their abundances agree with what is observed today. About a millionyears later the universe was sufficiently cool for atoms to form.

WHAT ISCERN:

- CERN, theEuropean Organisation for Nuclear Research, is one of the world's largestcenters for scientific research. Its business is fundamental physics, findingout what the universe is made of and how it works.

- Foundedin 1954, the CERN Laboratory sits astride the Franco-Swiss border near Geneva.It was one of Europe's first joint ventures and now has 20 member states, plussix actively participant observers including the United States and Russia.

One-third of Kiwis believe in alien visits

A third ofNew Zealanders believe aliens have visited Earth and a majority think psychicpowers exist, a study has found.

Onethousand respondents were asked by UMR Research if they believed "thatEarth has been visited by UFOs from other planets".

About 33per cent said they did, and Maori (42 per cent) and Pasifika (40 per cent) weremore likely to believe.

The numberof believers is greatest among the 30 to 44 year olds at 36 per cent, and dropsto 26 per cent among those aged 60 and over.

GraemeOpie, a sighting investigator and researcher for the Ufocus New ZealandResearch Network, said: "According to reports, the number of Americans thatbelieve in extra-terrestrials and life on other planets is quite high too, soit isn't too surprising that many of us here believe in UFOs."

The veteranHamilton traffic controller and pilot adds, "I can say with near certaintythat UFOs have been to Earth ... and there's plenty of literature to back thisbelief."

Sightingsin New Zealand include events such as the Kaikoura lights, the Ngatealanding-site mystery and the Gisborne UFO event of the late 70s that includedsightings of silver-suited humanoids in the Waimata Valley.

The UMRsurvey also found 55 per cent believed that at least some people have psychicpowers such as ESP.

Women (67per cent), over-60s (63 per cent) and Maori (60 per cent) more likely thanothers to be believers.

Six in 10 -72 per cent of women and 52 per cent of men - believe in the existence of Godor a universal spirit.

Nearly 8 in10 believe that Jesus was a real person who lived 2000 years ago, and 57 percent believe in life after death. That belief declined with age, falling from65 per cent among under-30s to 49 per cent among over-60s.

A quarterbelieved astrology can predict people's futures.

Astronomershave confirmed the existence of an Earth-like planet in the "habitablezone" around a star not unlike our own.

The planet,Kepler 22-b, lies about 600 light-years away and is about 2.4 times the size ofEarth, and has a temperature of about 22C.

It is theclosest confirmed planet yet to one like ours - an "Earth 2.0".

However,the team does not yet know if Kepler 22-b is made mostly of rock, gas orliquid.

During theconference at which the result was announced, the Kepler team said that it hadspotted some 1,094 new candidate planets.

The Keplerspace telescope was designed to look at a fixed swathe of the night sky,staring intently at about 150,000 stars. The telescope is sensitive enough tosee when a planet passes in front of its host star, dimming the star's light bya minuscule amount.

Kepleridentifies these slight changes in starlight as candidate planets, which arethen confirmed by further observations by Kepler and other telescopes in orbitand on Earth.

Kepler 22-bwas one of 54 candidates reported by the Kepler team in February, and is justthe first to be formally confirmed using other telescopes.

More ofthese "Earth 2.0" candidates are likely to be confirmed in the nearfuture, though a redefinition of the habitable zone's boundaries has broughtthat number down to 48.

Kepler 22-blies at a distance from its sun about 15% less than the distance from the Earthto the Sun, and its year takes about 290 days. However, its sun puts out about25% less light, keeping the planet at its balmy temperature that would supportthe existence of liquid water.

The Keplerteam had to wait for three passes of the planet before upping its status from"candidate" to "confirmed".

"Fortunesmiled upon us with the detection of this planet," said William Borucki,Kepler principal investigator at Nasa's Ames Research Center.

"Thefirst transit was captured just three days after we declared the spacecraftoperationally ready. We witnessed the defining third transit over the 2010holiday season."

The resultswere announced at the Kepler telescope's first science conference, alongsidethe staggering number of new candidate planets. The total number of candidatesspotted by the telescope is now 2,326 - of which 207 are approximatelyEarth-sized.

In total,the results suggest that planets ranging from Earth-sized to about four timesEarth's size - so-called "super-Earths" - may be more common thanpreviously thought.
